    Let me die free, immortalized by remembrance.

    To me it is the same whether life is long or short.

    ولسنا نُبالي طولها ولنا الدَّهر

    I have seen the lives of the noble pass briefly;

    We care not for their length, for eternity is ours.

    Indeed, many a soul has left a virtuous man's body,

    Ennobling its resting place, and ennobled by the grave.

    I wished to meet martyrdom valiantly,

    For the martyr of love receives no reward.

    وأمّا الذي يهوى فميتاتُه كُثر

    The one who strives for glory dies once;

    But the one who loves has many deaths.

    Shall I consent to my soul's humiliation,

    When the bright stars have envied it in the heaven of greatness?

    The light of truth has shone within my breast,

    As though dawn accompanies me whenever I travel by night.

    ففي نظري سرٌّ وفي مَنطِقي سِحر

    I sought my strength from the spirit of nature;

    There is a secret in my gaze and magic in my speech.

    I am nothing but a worshipper of her beauty,

    And she is nothing but this virgin utterance.

    Ask the sea, the forests, and the meadow

    That spring's mouth kisses, making it green.

    Ask the birds, the spirits, and the pool

    Whose droplets are like scattered pearls.

    Ask the star, the horizons, and the mountain

    On which I perched as the eagle perches.

    فلم يبقَ سرٌّ للجمالِ ولا ستر

    They will answer you: our secret has spread through that poetry;

    No secret of beauty remains, nor any veil.

    Poetry is nothing but my poems ringing out,

    And my prose is the prose that poetry falls below.

    How many a poem of delicate verse I have,

    At which the boulder rejoiced and the sea stirred!

    ومصدرُها العينانِ والقلبُ لا الفِكر

    My meanings in them draw upon the gifts of my youth;

    Their source is the eyes and the heart, not thought.

    كذلك في الوادي التقى النَّحلُ والزَّهر

    I spend the night melting poetry, while it melts me;

    Thus, in the valley, the bees and blossoms met.

    Many spoke poetry—rather, merely versified without

    Feeling, for the heart lacked warmth.

    Not every sparrow sings like the night-singer

    We heard whistling while our nights were moonlit.

    Through my poems I rose to the summit of greatness,

    And soared until there was neither catching me nor denying me.

    فَمِنهُ لكم نفعٌ ومنكم لهُ ضرُّ

    O sons of one mother, my heart is a sacrifice in loving you;

    From it comes benefit to you, and from you comes harm to it.

    As Moses made the spring burst forth with a blow,

    Yet a people who delight in unbelief denied him.

    O night, without poetry, love would not have endured,

    Nor beauty in this world, nor glory and pride.

    Jamil gave Buthayna her beauty,

    And in Qays's poetry, Layla's beauty retains its bloom.

    The tale of Beatrice came to us with Dante,

    And with Petrarch, Laura gained sweet remembrance.

    I truly have no need of fair-skinned beauties,

    For love holds treachery and deceit.

    Their hearts are like mirrors reflecting, one after another,

    Faces; as for their pledge, it is flow and ebb.

    I found no heart with room for my virtue

    And my love; my own heart is not satisfied with little.

    فيُطربني لحنٌ ويُنعشني عطر

    The bride of poetry pays me the finest visit;

    A melody delights me, and a fragrance revives me.

    I look out from a prison whose darkness I have grown used to

    Upon a garden whose branches are forever green.

    I bring forth poetry's light from the depth of darkness,

    And the fairest verses are born of hardship.

    I am patient in affliction, because I

    Have found solace in saying: a free man bears adversity.

    له انقدَّ قلبُ اليأسِ وابتسم الصّبر

    I struck with the sword of resolve, as a warrior strikes;

    At the stroke, despair's heart was cleft, and patience smiled.

    Then glory's daughters came, plaiting their laurel

    Into wreaths for the valiant man whose sorrow had dwindled.

    My bliss in life is misery, and likewise

    My misery is bliss; its secret has bewildered me.

    I draped myself in the two robes of experience and travel,

    And roamed like an eagle content in no nest.

    I ventured sea after sea, resolved

    To attain aims whose path is rugged.

    وأعظمُ منه ما يجيشُ بهِ الصَّدر

    The waves that roared and foamed did not alarm me;

    Greater than they is what surges in my breast.

    Like Chateaubriand in his journeys,

    I suffered, and of our travels the book remains.

    وجسمي لهُ ظِلٌّ ورِجلي لها أثر

    My poetry resounds in every land;

    My body casts a shadow, and my foot leaves a trace.

    I console myself with promises and hopes,

    And that is a pursuit before which stand death and captivity.

    وهل تشتفي نفسٌ يُرغِّبُها الزَّجر

    My soul has never accepted a life of calm;

    Can a soul find relief when restraint entices it?

    A woman with withered cheeks, frail like me,

    Whose conduct, hem, and hair had grown white,

    Saw me and said: "You here, my lord!

    Are you the one whom necessity has driven to travel?

    The children of comfort were not meant for exile

    Where misery, humiliation, and oppression gather.

    I would ransom your gallant father! May no scene have occurred

    That showed you to me beguiled by dreams and illusion."

    I told her: "Fate leads me

    Where I do not know, and crying aloud is of no use.

    Do not open my old wound, for it

    Is deep, and terror would seize your heart.

    لكِ الشكرُ يا ذات الوفاء لك الشكر

    You wept for one who suffers, though you too are suffering;

    My thanks to you, faithful one, my thanks to you."

    How cooling are pure tears upon the heart!

    From them the soul has a reserve against its calamities.

    A noble woman recognized me in affliction,

    While people with hostile glances disowned me.

    By your life, how many a young man beneath the cloak

    Is noble, with hardship and ease alike to him!

    Beneath the hut's dry thatch, how many a virtue

    It sheltered despite its narrowness, though the palace did not!

    I yearn for my homeland, and in separation I recall

    The sweetness of life there, whose remembrance is bitter.

    Beauty is nothing but what a young man loves,

    And after the eye, the heart has its excuse for love.

    وكلُّ جمالٍ بعدَها ما له قدر

    In my passion, my land's ugliness is loveliness;

    All beauty beyond it is without worth.

    How dear is al-Hamra, cradle of my boyhood,

    And how dear the valley, and how dear the river!

    Has my mother there not learned that I

    Live without a mother—and that is poverty?

    When a mother kisses her infant's brow,

    With wine in his eye and intoxication in her heart,

    And if a sister embraces her brother and he clasps her,

    And she holds him awhile, gazing and smiling,

    I choke on my saliva with jealousy and regret,

    And say: "Does this fracture have no mending?"

    هي الماءُ للنّفسِ التي عَيشُها قَفر

    My soul has thirsted for the coolness of a kiss;

    It is water for the soul whose life is a wasteland.

    I long for the kisses of a precious mother

    And a sister's kisses, above which purity has fluttered.

    I yearn for a fire around which have gathered

    Our loved ones, on a night whose wind is bitterly cold.

    فكلُّ فؤادٍ لم تحلّي بهِ صفر

    O kisses of loved ones, you are our consolation;

    Every heart in which you have not dwelt is empty.

    Are you a maiden, ransomed with my soul,

    Of dawn and bliss, whose mouth is my poetry?

    Do two eyes filled with love gaze upon me,

    And do I bend tenderly over a head with blond tresses?

    I spend my nights on the backs of a steed and a vessel,

    While you walk languidly, veiled by the private chamber.

    I truly discern your face whenever

    The rosy twilight appears or the bright stars shine.

    How dear the blooming rose within the sanctuary!

    You share its color, freshness, and fragrance.

    I marvel at this age: how often it has driven a young man

    To trials before which pride bows!

    It gave me drink now from poverty's cup, and now

    From wealth's cup, till good and evil became alike.

    O daughter of Syria, O daughter of Ya'rub,

    O daughter of ancestors whose virtues shine!

    Our branches have withered in their spring,

    But I hope their freshness will return.

    When lion cubs grow hungry after their ease,

    They take comfort in still having fang and claw.

    That bygone time will return,

    When sovereignty, glory, and victory were ours.

    We shall march to attain the heights beneath a banner

    That shades a land safeguarded by its vast army.

    If the people of noble deeds attain no goal,

    Virtue and remembrance suffice them from this world.

    Life is lived only through feeling, so my hour

    Is like a year, and through feeling my year is eternity.
