I sighed at clasping the maiden after my yearning,

Just so, the sound of embers dies away in water.

And I kissed her until I scattered her tears,

Yet my heart would not be soothed by an embrace.

So she moaned, as I had given my palm mastery over her waist,

And within my palm her waist became like a wrapped book.

    ألستَ بما لم ترجُ في الحلمِ تكتفي

    And she said: Thus we give, and generosity makes you greedy;

Are you not content with what you did not hope for in a dream?

My lip and cheek have withered from the heat of your mouth,

And my figure is like a branch: if you sway it, it breaks.

If this is love, may I never taste its sweetness,

Nor its bitterness, from a lover who goes to extremes.

    So I told her: Passion at its strongest is at its sweetest;

So, were you like me in love, you would not rebuke me.

Let me attain what tomorrow will not bestow,

And so do myself justice, for time is not fair.

For the cup and the fair woman begrudge the young man

A sip of saliva or a draught of wine.

So at times I see desires fulfilled, and at others

I yearn for a cup and a slender figure.

And my wakefulness in love comes only from slumber,

And you are only like an embellished phantom.

So from my pleasure comes my torment, and thus

My regret has lingered long over the briefest hours.
