I see the lovesick lover will not accept his admonishers’ counsel.

If you have anything other than reproach, bring it.

It is the heart: amid pain it seeks pleasure,

And deprivation of what it desires stirs its longing.

How, then, can I turn it back after wavering,

When love overflows from all its sides?

Every youth who loves beauty has his maiden,

And every gazelle is enamored of his oryx doe.

She is the dusky-white doe who fells a lion in his lair,

And snatches from his throat the prey he catches.

I am weak, while she is the strong one in love.

Ask the age how its shrewd men fare in love.

Let me behold deceptive lightning from her mouth,

For I have seen truth in its idle chatter.

I wished for a breath from it during conversation,

To inhale the scent of roses from its breath.
