أقولُI say لهاto her إذاwhen الطربُrapture استفزَّاstirs me
كفىsuffices بالذكرِwith remembrance والآثارِand lasting works عِزَّاas glory
I say to her when rapture stirs me:
When ecstasy excites me I say to her
Remembrance and lasting works are glory enough.
Memory and relics suffice as glory
رأيتُI saw المجدَglory ثوباًa garment غيرَnot بالٍworn out
ويُبليand wears out الدهرُtime ديباجاًbrocade وخزّاand silk-and-wool cloth
I saw glory as a garment that does not wear out,
I saw glory as an unsullied robe
While time wears out brocade and silk-and-wool cloth.
While time decays brocade and silk
أناI ملكٌa king وقلبيand my heart فيهِin it عرشٌa throne
وأشعاريand my poems تهزّshake العرشَthe throne هزّاa forceful shaking
I am a king, and in my heart is a throne;
I am a king, and my heart is my throne
And my poems shake the throne mightily.
My verses shake the throne, shaking it
علىdespite بؤسٍmisery حوىcontained شرَفاًhonor وكبراًand pride
فماso not حسدَenvied العزيزَthe mighty one ولاnor المُعِزّاthe bestower of honor
Despite misery, it held honor and pride,
From misery it drew nobility and greatness
So it envied neither the mighty one nor the bestower of honor.
It envied neither the mighty nor the honored
