On your cheek, watered with my tears.
On your cheek watered by my tears

So do not deny me a whiff of the flower that
So do not deprive me of smelling the flower
I withered my life's blossoms to make flourish.
For whose blossoming I withered the flower of my life

فقابلتِand you met دمعَthe tears of الوَجدِlonging بالبسَماتwith smiles
I wept from the love in which my misery lies,
I cried from the love in which is my misery
And you met the tears of longing with smiles.
Yet you met the tears of passion with smiles
فماso not كنتِyou were إِلاbut زَهرةَa flower جادَهاwatered it generously النَّدىthe dew

You were nothing but a flower watered by dew,
You were but a flower given water by the dew
So its petals opened to the droplets.
Whose petals opened for the drops

So do not deny my tears, which lit the darkness,
So do not deny my tears that illuminated the darkness
And were like flames from the stars.
And were like flames from the stars

And do not neglect my verse, which poured forth in love,
And do not neglect my poetry that overflowed in passion
And was like laments set to melodies.
And were like laments upon melodies

Your God, O fair one, is pleased with our tears,
My goddess, your God is pleased by our tears
And sometimes turns away from prayers.
And sometimes turns away from prayers

And the poetry I chant delights Him,
And He is delighted by the poetry I chant
So He is diverted from praise and petitions.
Forgetting praise and supplications

And the hosts of angels fall silent around Him,
And groups of angels around Him fall silent
To learn from me the sweetest melodies.
To take from me the most beautiful melodies

And how many a night casts its stillness over me,
Oh, how many nights cast upon me their stillness
So I hear within my breast the echo of heartbeats.
And I hear in my chest the echo of heartbeats

I wept, finding weeping sweet, because I
I cried and deemed crying lawful, because
Saw the soul's consolation in tears.
I saw the consolation of the soul in tears

And how many a sorrowful or remorseful man has wept in repentance,
How many sorrowful or regretful penitents cried
And cooled the burning pains within his breast.
And cooled what burned in their chests

His tears flowed pure in sorrow and sincerity,
Their tears flowed sincerely in sorrow and honesty
And revived a heart that had died amid sensual desires.
Bringing to life a heart that died in desires

I see your charms appear to my sight
Like lightning, leaving nothing but regrets.
Like lightning, leaving nothing but regrets
أتانيcame to me الهوىlove لماwhen مَرَرتِyou passed خفيفةًlightly
وجاءَand came نسيمُthe breeze of اللّيلِthe night بالنفحاتwith wafts of fragrance
Love came to me when you passed lightly by,
Passion came to me when you glided by lightly
And the night breeze brought wafts of fragrance.
And the night breeze brought the fragrances
فكنتِso you were ملاكاًan angel شاقَهُmade him yearn النورُlight والشَّذاand fragrance
فحنَّand he yearned إلىfor الجنَّاتِthe gardens فيamid الظُلُماتthe darkness
So you were an angel whom light and fragrance stirred to longing,
You were an angel burdened by light and aroma
And who yearned for the gardens amid the darkness.
Yearning for the gardens in the darkness
