لمستُI touched بنَفسيI myself أسطَعَthe brightest of النجماتِthe stars
لمستُ بنَفسي أسطَعَ النجماتِ
وقُلتُand I said أنيريilluminate (feminine command) هذهthis الظُّلُماتِthe darknesses
وقُلتُ أنيري هذه الظُّلُماتِ
I myself touched the brightest of the stars,
With my own hands I touched the brightest stars,
And I said, “Illuminate this darkness.”
And said “Illuminate these darknesses.”
أينكرdoes ... deny? فَضليmy merit حُسَّديthose who envy me وفضيلتيand my virtue
أينكر فَضلي حُسَّدي وفضيلتي
وقدwhile indeed فاضَتِoverflowed الأنوارُthe lights منfrom كلماتيmy words
وقد فاضَتِ الأنوارُ من كلماتي
Do those who envy me deny my merit and my virtue,
How can they deny my grace, envy my merit,
When radiance has overflowed from my words?
When lights have poured forth from my words?
ألمdid ... not? تَسمعواyou (plural) hear نثراًprose كوقعِlike the stroke of مُهَنّدٍan Indian-steel sword
ألم تَسمعوا نثراً كوقعِ مُهَنّدٍ

وشِعراً كموجٍ دائمِ الهَدَرات
Have you not heard prose like the stroke of an Indian-steel sword,
Have you not heard prose like the fall of a roaring torrent,
And verse like waves that never cease to roar?
And poetry like waves, ever undulating?

So say, when the eagle takes flight, soaring:
Say then, when the eagle soars on high:
“We have known you—lofty in thought and in your nesting places.”
“We know you, lofty in thought and essence.”
