وكمand how often شاقنيstirred my longing نوحُlament الغصونِthe branches وكمand how often شجاgrieved
وكم شاقني نوحُ الغصونِ وكم شجا
I fell in love with the garden’s rippling water.
I fell in love with the rippling water of the garden
And how often the branches’ lament stirred my longing, and how often it grieved me!
And how much the weeping of the branches pained me, how much it hurt
لقدindeed كادَnearly يَفنىperishes القلبُthe heart إلاexcept بقيةٌa remnant
لقد كادَ يَفنى القلبُ إلا بقيةٌ
تجمَّعَgathered فيهاin it الحبُّlove والمجدُand glory والرّجاand hope
تجمَّعَ فيها الحبُّ والمجدُ والرّجا
Indeed, the heart nearly perished, save for a remnant
My heart almost perished, except for a remnant
In which love, glory, and hope gathered.
In which love, glory and hope collected
فماso … not هيit إلاbut كوكبٌa star لاحَappeared ساطعاًshining brightly

بهِ يأنَسُ السَّاري الذي ضَلَّ في الدُّجى
So it is but a star that appeared, shining bright;
It was but a bright shining star
With it, the night traveler who strayed in darkness finds comfort.
With it the one who lost his way in the darkness finds comfort

It illuminates the darkness of ignorance around me, and guidance is found
It illuminates the darkness of ignorance around me and with it
Through it by all those endowed with virtue and reason.
All people of virtue and wisdom find guidance
