حَلمتُI dreamed بأنّيthat I فيin الرياضِthe gardens أسيرُwalk
وحَوليand around me وفوقيand above me مزهرٌblooming ونضيرُand verdant
I dreamed that I was walking in the gardens,
I dreamed I was walking in gardens bright,
And around me and above me, everything was blooming and verdant.
Surrounded by blossoms and scents of delight.
وللبدرِand the full moon has أنوارٌlights كخيطانِlike threads of فضَّةٍsilver
تفضَّضَbecame silvered منهاfrom them جَدولٌa stream وغديرand a pool
And the full moon had lights like threads of silver,
The full moon shone with a silvery light
A stream and a pool were silvered by them.
Like strands of pure silver that dazzled the sight.
وللريحِand the wind has فيin الأوراقِthe leaves أنغامُmelodies of شاعرٍa poet
لهُhe has فوقَabove أنّاتِmoans of الرّبابِthe rabab زفيرa sigh
And the wind in the leaves had the melodies of a poet,
The leaves whispered soft to the wind's gentle strains,
Whose sigh rose above the rabab's moans.
The sweet music of lutes filled the plains.
فأطربنيso it enraptured me التغريدُbirdsong منfrom ألفِa thousand طائرٍbird
يقولُit says لأهلِto the people of الشعرpoetry أنتَyou أميرa prince
So the singing of a thousand birds enraptured me,
A thousand birds twittered their joyous refrains
Saying to the poets, 'You are a prince.'
"You are the prince and king of all poets", they claimed.
وعلَّمنيand taught me الإنشادَchanting والنَّظمَand verse composition طائرٌa bird
لهُit has فيin قلوبِthe hearts of العاشقينَlovers صَفيرa whistle
And a bird taught me chanting and composing verse,
One bird taught me to versify and compose,
Whose whistle sounds in lovers' hearts.
His songs stirred the hearts of all lovers he knows.
فقلتُso I said لهُto it ياO مُلِهمَinspirer of الشعرَpoetry والهوىand love
أعِدrepeat لحنَa melody of حبٍّlove فالحياةُfor life تَسيرmoves on
So I said to it, 'O inspirer of poetry and love,
I said "Teach me to sing of affection that grows,"
Repeat a melody of love, for life goes on.'
He trilled a sweet tune as the morning wind blows.
فغنّىthen it sang وولّىand turned away طائراًflying فتبعتُهُso I followed it
وقدand indeed كدتُI nearly منfrom شوقيmy longing إليهِfor it أطيرfly
Then it sang and flew away, so I followed it,
I followed entranced by his melody clear,
And in my longing for it, I nearly flew.
My longing to join him rose higher and higher.
وأصبحتِand became الأطيارُthe birds أجملَthe loveliest of نسوةٍwomen
حَواليكَaround you والأثوابُand the garments منكَfrom you حَريرsilk
And the birds became the loveliest of women,
The birds were all ladies of beauty so rare,
Around you, and their garments were silk from you.
Their gowns were of silk and their jewels past compare.
وماand not كنتَyou were إلاexcept الطائرَthe bird الفردَlone بينهاamong them
وليسand there is no لهُfor it بينَamong الطيورِthe birds نظيرequal
And you were but the lone bird among them,
But one was outstanding for charm and for grace,
And it had no equal among the birds.
No equal among them in figure and face.
فقلتِthen you said أتدريdo you know ماwhat الهوىlove قلتُI said عبرةٌa tear
فقلتِthen you said وماand what التذكارُremembrance قلتُI said عبيرfragrance
Then you said, 'Do you know what love is?' I said, 'A tear.'
"Do you know what is love?" she asked with a smile so bright,
Then you said, 'And what is remembrance?' I said, 'Fragrance.'
"It is tears", I replied. She said "What are memories?" I said "Sweet delight".
