How splendid an army that is trained,

And whose heads face peril on the day of battle!

And its soldiers are like Tumadur’s sons, if there is

Exhortation from mothers like their mother’s.

At al-Qadisiyyah, brothers met their death,

And the mother said, as tears overflowed:

"Praise be to God, who has increased my

Honor through their deaths; thus I have recompense."

The peace of peoples rests on their readiness

For war, while the ambitious gaze is lowered.

Nothing has held your neighbor back from you but his fear

Of his house being torn down.

An unarmed nation carries no weight,

And an armed nation’s prestige is vast.
