How long shall lions struggle with fetters,

while this age has raised monkeys high?

So often have I found myself shuffling in my fetters,

then torn the chains and fetters apart!

And amid calamities I have unsheathed my resolve,

a sword that cleaves grievous adversity.

I learned people's ways until I came to fear,

because of their great baseness, that I would end up alone.

So, through my sound judgment, I came to see a man

as base in character by nature, or noble.

    فتربيةُ المربِّي لن تُفيدا

    Indeed, acquired habits are overcome by innate dispositions;

so an educator's training will be of no avail.

Our polishing beautifies gold and pearls,

but polishing does not change iron.

I wept over friendship because of a friend

whose loyalty remains forever mere promises.

And I scorned chaste love when

I saw my beloved show coldness.

And I had given her possession of a noble heart,

and she had seen me give freely of my very soul.

And in my anger I strove to win her favor,

so ingratitude was the reward for my kindness.

I wonder: does she not remember when we spent the night,

as I kissed her cheek and neck,

and shed the truest tears, until

they became necklaces upon her lovely neck?

And toward the east at night I stretched out my palm,

renewing my vows of love for her.

And she had done the same as I, while

the stars of night watched us as witnesses.

Such are beautiful women: in their folly, they love

whatever in the world appears new.
