إلامَhow long أذوقُI taste طعمَthe flavor الموتِdeath حيَّاalive
وطرفُand the eye السعدِgood fortune لاnot يَرنوgazes إليَّاtoward me
How long must I taste the flavor of death while still alive,
Why should I taste the flavor of death while alive,
While fortune's eye does not turn toward me?
And the glance of bliss does not look towards me.
أفكّرُI ponder حائراًbewildered وأذوبُand I melt وَجداًwith longing
ورأسيand my head غائصٌburied فيin راحتيّاmy two palms
I ponder, bewildered, and melt with longing,
I think confused and melt with passion,
And my head is buried in my palms.
And my head is immersed in my palm.
ولوand if أنيthat I قدرتُI could لكنتُI would be أبكيI weep
وأُغرِقُand I drown بالمدامعِwith tears مُقلتياmy two eyes
And if I could, I would weep,
If only I could, I would have cried,
And drown my eyes in tears.
And drowned my eyelids with tears.
ففيfor in الدمعاتِtears ليfor me فرجٌrelief يسيرٌslight
وهذاand this الدّهرُage ضنَّwas stingy بهِwith it علياtoward me
For in tears there is a little relief for me,
For in tears I find some relief,
And this age has withheld it from me.
While this life has been miserly towards me.
ذكرتُI remembered أحبَّتيmy loved ones والموجُand the waves دونيin my way
وبعدand after الكدِّtoil أُسقِطَwas dropped فيinto يدياmy two hands
I remembered my loved ones, with the waves between us,
I remembered my loved ones and the wave underneath me,
And after toil, I was overcome with dismay.
And after hardship I fell into its hands.
وذاتُand the woman of الطهرِpurity تبكيweeps أوor تصلِّيprays
وتلطمُand slaps خدَّهاher cheek تحتَbeneath الثرياthe Pleiades
And the pure woman weeps or prays,
The essence of purity cries or prays,
And slaps her cheek beneath the Pleiades.
And strikes its cheek beneath the soil.
