Tears and sleeplessness have effaced your beauty.

And still, bleeding at heart, you lament and recite verse.

If indeed you have a soul inclined toward reason,

Come, let me show you how a gathering is scattered,

And an eagle's pinion breaks while it soars,

And the bird's chicks perish while it sings,

And beauty withers in youth and fades away,

And majesty falls, though it was almost worshipped on earth.

For many a leader among his people, once a spreading tree,

With eagles' nests upon it and a resting place,

Fell, and humankind trembled at his fall,

And left an echo resounding after him.

I marvelled that he slept in the darkness of the earth,

Though whenever the carefree slept, he would stay awake,

And spend his nights gazing into the sky,

Conversing by night with glory's star there, and watching it.

I laughed at the world for a time, yet it

Surely makes me weep against my will and pine in grief.

So misery and blessings are alike to me; if

This is a young man's life, then I surely renounce it.

I stretch out my hand, unthinking, to wipe away the tears,

Then learn how tears freeze within the eye.

And I beat a breast whose ribs are bleeding,

Then draw my palm back from a heart aflame.

    فكيفَ على خَطبِ الرّدى أتجلّد

    And parting from my loved ones surely saps my strength;

How, then, can I steel myself against death's calamity?

And in my soul are hopes whose dust I have scattered,

And in my heart a mortal wound left unbandaged.

How wretched is the far-off lover who sees

His loved ones beneath the earth, while he is alone.

And the days deny him even a visit,

And a longing glance, as he sees home grow distant.

May there be no separation whose length cuts life short,

And in which hopes, love, and resolve run out.

There I have a land whose beauty I worshipped,

And I am nothing but a lover at worship.

On it are my loved ones, whose hearts

Tug at a helpless heart that rebels.

I was born with a heart whose beating is gentle,

As when Ma'bad touched the strings and brought delight.

It has melodies, all of them ardent longing,

That stir the heart of stone, though stone is unyielding.

To its misfortune, it traverses level ground,

And roams in perfection's sky and ascends.

Time insisted that I be its outcast,

And how can one unable to move hope to draw near?

I endured what melted away my life-breath,

And said, 'Perhaps patience in calamity will help.'

But the cloud that gives no rain did not disperse,

Nor did the bolted door open.

Nor did my tears efface the wrong,

Nor did the fire of my longing within my ribs die down.

Therefore I preferred error to guidance,

And all that is black has captivated my soul.

So I have come to see in despair a weary man's repose,

As one in fetters grows used to the heavy chain.
