تَثاقلَgrew heavy لَيليmy night والظَّلامُand the darkness ثقيلُheavy
وأقصَرُand the shortest ليلٍnight فيamid الهُمُومِsorrows طَويلُlong
My night has grown heavy, and the darkness is heavy;
And even the shortest night is long amid sorrows.
كأنّas though علىupon قلبيmy heart رصاصاًlead مِنَof الأسىgrief
وليسَand there is no إلىto الصبرِpatience الجميلbeautiful سبيلpath
As though leaden grief lay upon my heart,
And there is no path to noble patience.
فكيفَso how وحوليwhile around me ظلمةٌdarkness فوقَupon ظلمةٍdarkness
ولاand no ضوءَlight فيهاin it والسراجُand the lamp ضئيلdim
So how could I, with darkness upon darkness around me,
And no light within it, and the lamp so dim?
فماso not الجوُّthe sky إِلاexcept قبرُthe grave of نجمa star مغوّرٍsunken
إليهtoward it يحنُّyearns الطَّرفُthe eye وهوwhile it is كليلweary
So the sky is but the grave of a sunken star,
Toward which the eye yearns, though weary.
هوit is الليلُnight للأرواحِfor spirits مجرىa passage ومَلعَبٌand a playground
وللريحِand for the wind فيهin it زفرةٌa deep sigh وعويلand a wail
It is night, a passage and playground for spirits,
And within it the wind sighs and wails.
وتحتَand beneath دَياجِيهِits darkness النّفوسُthe souls تناوَحتwailed to one another
فلمso not يَشفَwas quenched منof تِلكَthose النُّفُوسِsouls غليلburning thirst
And beneath its darkness, souls wailed to one another,
Yet the burning thirst of those souls was not quenched.
لقدindeed راعَنيterrified me ليلٌa night يخافُfears سُكُونَهits stillness
عَليلٌone ailing ويخفىand lies hidden فيin دُجاهits darkness قتيلone slain
A night has truly terrified me: its stillness is feared
By the ailing, while one slain lies hidden in its darkness.
ويُرخيand it lets fall علىover شرّthe worst of الجّرائمِcrimes سِترَهُits veil
وييأسُand despairs فيهin it آرِقٌa sleepless person وخَلِيلand a lover
And it lets its veil fall over the worst of crimes,
And in it the sleepless and the lover despair.
هوit is اللّيلُnight يخفيhides الويلَwoe والنّاسُwhile people نُوَّمٌare asleep
وسيفُand the sword of الرّدَىdeath فوقَabove النيامِthe sleepers صقيلpolished
It is night: it hides woe while people sleep,
And death's sword gleams above the sleepers.
وكمand how often أرَقٍsleeplessness يأتيcomes علىupon قَلقٍan anxious soul بهِin it
فأوقِدُso I kindle قلبيmy heart شمعَةًas a candle ويَسيلand it flows
And how often, in it, sleeplessness overtakes the anxious,
So I kindle my heart as a candle, and it melts.
وقدand perhaps أَتأسَّىI take solace بامرئin Imru' القيسِal-Qays قائلاًsaying
سَيطلعُwill rise صُبحٌa dawn كالرّجاءِlike hope جَميلbeautiful
And I may take solace in Imru' al-Qays, saying:
A dawn will rise, beautiful as hope,
ويَقشَعُand will disperse نورُthe light of الشمسِthe sun غَيماًclouds مُلبَّداًthickly massed
ويَسريand will drift نسيمٌa breeze والغُصُونُwhile the branches تميلsway
And the sun's light will disperse thickly massed clouds,
And a breeze will drift by as the branches sway.
فلاso may ... not ذقتُI taste إِلاexcept فيin الصّباحِthe morning مَنيّتيmy death
ولاand may ... not ماتdie إِلاexcept فيin الضّياءthe light عليلone ailing
So may I taste death only in the morning,
And may the ailing die only in the light.
