هَلّاwhy not ثناكِturned you back إليَّto me قلبٌa heart راضِwilling
فأناfor I am قتيلُslain by الصدِّrejection والإعراضِand disregard
Why has a willing heart not turned you back to me?
For I am slain by rejection and disregard.
كمhow often شاقنيstirred my longing مرأىthe sight of الجمالِbeauty فلمso did not تذُقtaste
فيin الليلِthe night عينيmy eye لذّةَthe pleasure of الإغماضclosing the eyes
So often has the sight of beauty stirred my longing that
my eye has never tasted the pleasure of closing at night.
عيناكِyour two eyes كالبحرِlike the sea الذيthat أبصرتُهُI beheld it
فيin ثغرthe port of بيروتَBeirut الرَّبيعَthe spring الماضيpast
Your eyes are like the sea that I beheld
in Beirut's harbor last spring.
إنيindeed I أسيرُI travel علىon السفينةِthe ship باكياًweeping
وعليَّand against me دهريmy fate بالتغرُّبِto exile قاضpassing judgment
Indeed, I sail aboard the ship, weeping,
and my fate condemns me to exile.
وكأنand as though ثغرَكِyour mouth فيin دياجيthe dark nights of غربتيmy exile
برقٌlightning يشقُّcleaves الليلَthe night بالإيماضwith flashes
And your mouth, in the dark nights of my exile, is like
lightning cleaving the night with its flashes.
وكأنand as though ذكرَكthe memory of you فيin بقيةِthe remainder of مُهجتيmy lifeblood
زهرُthe blossoms of الخريفِautumn علىupon ذبولِthe withering of رياضgardens
And the memory of you, in what remains of my lifeblood, is like
autumn blossoms amid withering gardens.
