علىfor المرءِa person ذكرُrecalling السَّعدِhappiness يومَon a day of شقاءِmisery
O Dante, why did you say, “The worst affliction
for a man is to recall happiness on a day of misery”?
ذكرتَyou recalled نعيمَbliss الحبِّlove فيin شقوةِthe anguish of النَّوىseparation
ولمand did not ترَsee بعدَafter اليأسِdespair نورَthe light of رجاءhope
You recalled love’s bliss amid the anguish of separation,
and saw no light of hope after despair.
علىdespite أنَّthe fact that ليfor me فيin شدَّةِthe intensity of البؤسِmisery لذَّةًa pleasure
بذكرِthrough recalling نعيمٍbliss فيهِin it كلُّall عزائيmy solace
Yet amid intense misery I find delight
in recalling bliss, wherein lies all my solace.
لذكرىfor the memory of نعيميmy bliss فيin العذابِtorment عذوبةٌsweetness
وبعضُand some of سروريmy joy كانwas منهُfrom it بُكائيmy weeping
The memory of my bliss is sweet amid torment,
and some of my joy was what made me weep.

Our fates were alike in love and hatred;
how, then, did we differ, when your ailment is mine?
لكلّfor every امرئٍperson أطوارُهُhis moods وشعورُهُand his feelings

Each person has his own moods and feelings,
yet the misery of most people is my misery.

A friend who does not know my ailment says:
“Take comfort in the wretched you meet.”
فقلتُso I said رُوَيداًnot so fast ماnot غريقٌa drowning man يهولُهُterrifies him
حِمامٌdeath كمُبتَلٍّlike one wetted بقطرةِby a drop of ماءwater
So I said, “Not so fast! A drowning man is not as frightened
by death as one wetted by a drop of water.”
