    Are your eyes at times gazing toward the blossoms,

    so that the heart yearns for them in the darkness of the breast?

    The passions of that heart—I know them:

    they flow like a spring and rage like the sea.

    Whenever the stillness of night stirred what lay within me,

    I yearned for the sorrows of contemplation and remembrance.

    By your life, sorrow swiftly carries youth away,

    just as surely the cold carries off the blossoms.

    The moonlit nights here have passed,

    without poetry’s string once resounding through them.

    Nights in these lands are long,

    whereas nights in the East hurried swiftly by.

    Here the eye takes no delight in light; rather,

    there, darkness is sweeter to me than the full moon.

    Nights have gone, their memory lingering in our hearts,

    as flowers leave behind a trace of fragrance.

    فنَنشُقه حيناً وعبرتُنا تجري

    How lovely remembrance is—and it is their fragrance;

    we breathe it in awhile as our tears flow.

    And when we journey, we look toward what lies behind us,

    bidding farewell to an age that vanished from the finest part of life.

    The sight of beauty and splendor has filled us with longing,

    and love, fleeting as a bird’s shadow—or an age of bloom.

    Traces of misery or bliss lay scattered

    along the pathways of time, through hardship and ease.

    And these traces are nothing but rays

    of the sun, when the sea’s face is its mirror.

    Fragments of my heart and tears were scattered

    like a bird’s feathers at the entrance to its nest.

    I would ransom you, O land of Syria! For from you I possess

    wealth amid poverty, and intoxication without wine.

    وأملأ من أراوحِ تلكَ الربى صَدري

    When shall I tread the soil that is amber,

    and fill my breast with the spirits of those hills;

    when shall my soul feel safe from exile and estrangement,

    and even after familiar intimacies still have a backward glance born of terror?

    Then I would spend my life among my people and their soil,

    dearer to my aching heart than gold.

    لئن تَدُخلِ الدّنيا رَمَتك على عسر

    How often I was told: “Postpone your departure, young man;

    if you enter the world, it will cast you into hardship.”

    But I heeded no counsel until I had melted my heart’s core

    and suffered what the brave man suffered in captivity.

    Once I was greatly ambitious; now I am content

    with the merest thing, since I was overpowered in my own affairs.

    How can a free man attain glory and riches

    when men of baseness and guile surround him?

    ولو كنتُ ماءً كنتُ من منبعِ النّهر

    If I were a flower, by God, I would be a rose;

    if I were water, I would spring from the river’s source;

    ولو كنتُ نوراً كنتُ من طلعةِ البدرِ

    if I were a month, I would be May in bloom;

    if I were light, I would shine from the full moon’s rising face;

    ولو كنتُ نوماً كنتُ من غفوةِ الفجر

    if I were a lifetime, I would belong to the age of youth;

    if I were sleep, I would be the slumber of dawn.

    Since my absence, how fare our people?

    And how are the smiling maidens whose smiles reveal pearls?

    How are the homeland, the fields, the woods, and the hills?

    How are the nights of light, fragrance, and rain?

    Ah, remember me whenever darkness pitches its tent,

    and a reverberating roar in the valley startles you.

    Ah, remember me whenever the east wind blows,

    and evening tales of youthful love behind the curtain stir your longing.

    Is there any return for the exile, whose month

    is like a year in its affliction, and whose day is like a month?

    I saw darkness weeping over the blossoms when

    I wandered through the gardens at the break of dawn.

    Fragrance breathed forth like love from a lover’s mouth,

    and I became like night, weeping over my life.

    My hope is my solace in affliction—and thus

    I see night around me, but morning within my breast.

    وما ظمأي إلا على ضَفّةِ النَّهر

    I suffer torment in my fire, yet behold my paradise;

    my thirst comes only upon the riverbank.

    Through loving you, my captivity was my victory—for who has ever seen

    a captive come to fear deliverance from captivity?
