The heart is an impregnable fortress,

and conquest is a clear triumph.

How many hearts you have conquered,

    which soften at my gentleness!

    Conquerors cannot match a conqueror

    to whom hearts submit.

And love is a war of changing fortunes,

in which death counts for little.

Must I, whenever a mantle appears

in which beauty takes many forms,

yearn toward it, while my heart

    is wherever the arena lies?

So, O eyes of beautiful women,

    you are nothing but death.

    And O tresses hanging down,

within you are night's darkness and longing.

    And O eyebrows resembling

gleaming swords the smiths have polished,

    and O eyelids whispering

where speech is laden with sorrow,

and O mouths like a mirage

    within which flame lies hidden,

and O cheeks like a garden

    watered by flowing water,

    and O bosoms upon which

    jasmine has blossomed,

and O breasts that peered out

    as the prisoner peered out,

    and O slender waists

that make the plump grow thin,

    and O hands, on which

    the miser lavished his soul,

    and O white wrists

    on which bracelets jingle,

    and O figures, sheltered

    by costly silk,

I have gone mad for you, and I say:

the sweetness of life is madness.
