ياO وَردَrose جورِof Jur الذيwho حيّاgreeted فأحياناand so revived us
أشبَهتَyou resemble خَدّاًa cheek بماءِwith the water of الحُسنbeauty ريّاناdrenched
O rose of Jur, who greeted us and brought us to life,
You resemble a cheek drenched in beauty’s water.
اذاwhen رأيتكَI see you لاحappears الكونُthe universe مُبتسِماًsmiling
كالثَّغرlike the mouth واخضرَّتand grow green الآمالُhopes أَغصاناboughs
When I see you, the universe appears smiling,
like a mouth, and hopes grow green as boughs.
وإنand if جنيتُكI pluck you أذكرْI recall غادةًa maiden حملَتshe carried
منof الأزاهِرblossoms أشكالاًshapes وألواناand colors
And if I pluck you, I recall a maiden who carried
blossoms of many shapes and colors.
كمhow many باقةٍa bouquet مِنكَof you ضمّتهاclasped it أنامِلُهاher fingertips
كأنهاas though they were لؤلؤٌpearls قدindeed ضمَّembraced مُرجاناcoral
How many a bouquet of you her fingertips have clasped,
as though they were pearls embracing coral.
ومنكَand from you لونٌcolor وطِيبٌand fragrance فيin غلالِتهاher sheer robe
وهيand she التيwho تَكتسيclothes herself نوراًlight وريحاناand sweet basil
And your color and fragrance are in her sheer robe,
while she clothes herself in light and sweet basil.
إليَّto me أهدَتكَshe gave you as a gift مضموماًclasped بأنملِهاwith her fingertips
حتىuntil رأيتُI saw الهوىlove حُسناًbeauty وإحساناand kindness
To me she gave you, clasped in her fingertips,
until I saw love as beauty and kindness.
ولاand not أزالُI cease بزَهرٍthrough blossoms مِنكَof yours أَذكرُهاI remember her
لأننيbecause I لمhave not أزلceased بالطّيبِwith fragrance نشواناintoxicated
And through your blossoms I still remember her,
for I remain intoxicated with fragrance.
وقدand sometimes تجودُshe gives generously بخَدٍّwith a cheek ليto me فأحسبُهso I take it
مماfrom what جَنَتهُshe plucked it ومنand from رياكَyour fragrance رياناdrenched
And sometimes she offers me a cheek, and I take it
for something she has plucked, drenched in your fragrance.
قلبيmy heart تعشَّقَloved passionately خدَّيهاher two cheeks كماjust as عشِقَتfell in love
فراشةُthe butterfly الرّوضِof the garden لوناًa hue منكَof yours فتاناbewitching
My heart fell in love with her cheeks, as did
the garden’s butterfly with a bewitching hue of yours.
ياO وردَrose جورٍof Jur عليكupon you الرّيحُthe wind نافحةٌblowing gently
نهزُّwe shake فيin الصّبحِthe morning أزهاراًblossoms وأفناناand boughs
O rose of Jur, the wind wafts over you.
We shake blossoms and boughs in the morning,
وتحملُand it carries الطّبَhealing مثلَlike النفسِthe soul حاملةbearing
للحبِّof love حتىuntil يَصيرَbecomes الكونُthe universe أكواناuniverses
and it carries healing, like the soul, bearing
love, until the universe becomes universes.
