When my star fell, I remembered love,

And unfolded from my youth’s past what lay folded away.

Then I knew that I was ignorant and heedless,

And shed my tears in remorse and heartache.

Indeed, my happiness was lost through my ignorance,

And in ignorance one loses what one possesses.

Had I not yielded to desire and debased myself,

The star of good fortune would not have fallen from my firmament.

    والهجرُ أعظمُ ما بهِ حكم الهوى

    The punishment was severe, though I did no wrong deliberately;

And estrangement is the harshest sentence love has passed.

I was given a dream of my bliss in place of seeing it,

As though a storyteller had recounted his tale.

And afterward I saw my hopes and my love—

Blossoms scattered at evening, or withered.
