    فنوَّرَ الزَّهرُ فيهِ وهو ممطورُ

    Upon this countenance the light has shone;

    so flowers blossomed upon it, drenched with rain.

    But it is a garden: no flower can be plucked

    from it, for the fence of hair is braided.

    If I come to pluck it or water it, I am terrified

    by a sword from the eye, bearing fire and light.

    In my love for her, I keep retreating in defeat.

    And how can I triumph when the slayer is victorious?

    فليتَ قلبي على الأثمارِ عصفور

    On the bough of her figure is all the fruit I desire;

    if only my heart were a sparrow perched upon the fruit!

    Your eyes moistened your cheeks, and there took shape

    for me a rose in bloom, with dew strewn about.

    So shower the roses in your cheeks with all they need

    from the rain clouds of your eyes, for kindness is met with thanks.
