Welcome if they're guests, but war if settlers impose
But war and blows, if the lodgers transgress.

If they wish for peace, it is happiness.

The wronged man tucks evil beneath his arm.

Yet a veil covers some minds because of him
While a veil from him covers some minds.

You have taken; your stay there has grown tiresome.

Hold yourself back, do not lie about God and creation For after lamentation may come wailing
This one is felled, and that one bleats.

His due in praise, when praise is powerless?
They prayed to God through it, it was His tongue In others, supplications are seldom answered

Before him, all armies were dust.
Faith now their haven, harmony their cloak

He was God's sword, and like His sword
Ibn Sa’d marched opening the West to guidance
In keenness and deadly force when an ordeal tested him.
Bearing ease and torment on his two palms
وقدand indeed أكثرmultiplied الجرّاحُal-Jarrah جَرحىthe wounded of عُداتِهhis enemies

Al-Jarrah multiplied the wounded among his foes,
When order was stable under his sword
And their severed limbs, until the banner stood firm.
Mercy and prosperity came to the land
فوفّقَso he reconciled بينbetween البأسِfierceness والحلمِand forbearance مُقسِطاًdealing justly
وماand not العدلُjustice إِلاexcept أنthat يَصحَّbe right جزاءrecompense
He joined fierceness with forbearance, dealing justly;
A caliphate shaded the two continents
Justice is only that recompense be right.
The Arab ruled wherever he wished
وإنَّand indeed معاداةَenmity with الكريمِthe noble صداقةٌfriendship
وإنَّand indeed موالاةَalliance with اللئيمِthe base عداءenmity
Enmity with the noble is friendship,
When its protectors wandered from shielding it
And friendship with the base is enmity.
Usurpers and upstarts snatched it away

Amr came to Egypt, and its people greeted him,
External enemies attacked from all groups
Saying, 'Concord to those of noble deeds!'
My people had no leaders to resist

He freed them from bondage and error,
Woe to he who appointed foreigners to rule
Their faith was safety and serenity for them.
Ministers and advisors misleading him

Ibn Sa'd advanced, conquering the West for guidance,
He's the king yet only concubines guard him
In his two palms lay blessing and misery.
Ever his most trusted caretakers

When affairs were settled beneath his sword,
Had the Abbasids had Umayyad mettle
Mercy and prosperity descended upon the earth.
No usurping fools could have seized power

وللعربيand for the Arab الملكُdominion حيثwherever يشاءhe wishes
A caliphate sheltered the peoples of East and West,
Tomorrow the princely rulers will be their slaves
The Arab held dominion wherever he wished.
Debased the Messenger and the Caliphs

When its defenders withdrew from its sanctuary,
My people showed cowardice and conflict
Boys and outsiders seized it.
An affliction with no comparable affliction

وليسَand there are no لقوميfor my people فيin الونىlassitude زُعماءleaders
Enemies from every people rose against it,
Stay your haughtiness, o daughter of Rome
And my people had no leaders amid their lassitude.
Don't oppress us, we are miserable

Woe to him who entrusted his affairs to foreigners,
Our glory is in the past, we ruled half the world
Their commanders and ministers gathered around him.
Though tomorrow a shroud will cover it

This is dominion: none protect it but its builders,
We ruled when truth and power were one
Who are forever its faithful guardians.
Nobles even while battered and scarred

Had al-Abbas had the like of Umayya,
I see every elevated thing threatened with downfall
No realm governed by those associates would have been lost.
Every morn overtakes eve in black night

The commanders of the faithful became their slaves,
Don't gloat in joy, o foreign lady, at our misery
God's Messenger and the caliphs were demeaned.
Your people now wield power and might

My people failed one another, and their kings' discord
We will live by remembering past glory
Was an affliction upon them beyond all affliction.
The ancient sword still sharp in its sheath

Easy, daughter of Rome; do not vaunt yourself,
We seek what is God and kingship’s right
Do not wrong us: we are wretched.
To heal wandering souls should we meet

Yesterday is ours, and we possess half of history,
With the strike of desperation we take vengeance
But tomorrow has a veil drawn over it.
So a land may welcome us or horizons narrow

We ruled, and ours were right and strength,
A battle cry must arise in Arabic
Despite our misery, we are noble.
And divine praises where struggle brings union Either victory with enduring glory

I see everyone aloft threatened with a fall,
Or defeat with the most noble dying
And every morning followed by evening.
This will please our Lord and Prophet

Do not laugh, foreign woman, amid our sorrow,
Our ancestors too, death no barrier
While your people wield power and judgment.
Can the Arab free man enjoy life settled

We shall live by remembering glory after its passing,
While humiliation and abuse batter him?
The ancient sword still has an edge.
If foreign rule degraded my people

We seek the right of God, dominion, and eminence,
Alien chiefs lording as tyrants over them
So an encounter may heal the souls of those adrift.
I'd abandon that land if not my peoples'

We strike the blow of the desperate to avenge ourselves,
No free soul can abide the strangers' scorn
So earth may widen, or space grow narrow.
In my core an Arab ambition smolders

There must be an Arab cry of 'God is greatest,'
With the stars its abode and the skies its end
And 'There is no god but God,' where jihad is sacrifice.
With one last Arab cry of "God is Greatest"

Either victory with everlasting glory,
And "There is no god but God" where struggle commenced Either triumph in which eternal glory is found
Or defeat in which death is sweet.
Or loss where noble dying is solace

By that we satisfy our Lord and our Prophet,
And our forefathers; in such death lies contentment.

Can the free Arab enjoy his life,
When his rest, in humiliation, is torment?

With masters from among them watching over her.

The free man finds estrangement under a stranger's rule.

Between my ribs lives an Arab resolve,
Whose home is the star, whose courtyard is the sky.
