I yearn for the fragrance of tresses and mouth

whenever the overhanging jasmine blossoms breathe their scent.

Nor are jasmine blossoms, fresh with dew,

more fragrant than that smiling mouth.

Nor are the wind's sighs among its leaves

sweeter than the whisper of softly modulated speech.

There I have, amid water and greenery,

    blossoms, spreading shade, and song,

scenes of love; whenever their memory returns,

I hear the whispered confidences of a vision greeting me.

Then I recited a passage from Milton's Paradise,

in which Eve sprang from Adam's dream.

and told my heart, 'Alas for you, do not fall apart.'

    فدَعهُ لِهذا الخافقِ المتألِّم

    It said, 'I have grown so used to sorrow that I savor it;

so leave it to this aching, beating heart.'

It refused, and my eyes insisted on finding relief

in tears and memories, both bearing Manshim's perfume.

    فمن يَشقَ يرحَم من يئنُّ ويُرحَم

    Then suffer, my heart, through love and hope;

whoever suffers pities those who moan, and is pitied.

Whoever is made insolent by good fortune remains heedless

of the grief that draws blood from a wounded heart.

I see my trial as a gift to me, and my darkness

as light that shows me clearly all that is obscure,

just as blossoms were opened and a thicket nurtured

by sunbeams like a benefactor's smiles.

Indeed, I mourn my joy and youth,

and weep like one who grieves and feels pity.

I gaze at the traces in the loneliness of separation,

and they rise from the night of cares like stars.

Yes, the eyes of lovers have rays

that illuminate every darkness in their thoughts.

as early rain unfolds a flower still in bud.

and brightness from a brow and smiling mouth,

I love the beauty of art in every form,

and my heart is enraptured by perfected beauty:

the notes of a melody, the verse of a poem,

the forms carved by a chisel and colors traced by a pen.

My beloved, do you not remember my worship

of your beauty for hours, without speaking,

your eye in mine and your hair in my hand,

and my heart throbbing like a bracelet on a wrist?

And you are like a lovely instrument I pluck,

from which I hear every delicate melody.

You appear amid my sorrow, and I smile at love

and raise my head, hopeful and expectant,

gladdening the astrologer's eye at night.

pass your hands over my heart; perhaps it

will return to the bygone days of love.

When snow covers our land, O beautiful one,

and the color of heaped clouds makes it desolate,

our sun bestows its rays upon it,

and it emerges in spring's embroidered cloak.

If ever your soul speaks to you of the man

whose poems ring with the clang of a keen-edged sword,

and cries of pain, love, and disappointment,

    portraying Dante wandering through Hell,

with his enemy writhing before him

like a weak fledgling in an aged eagle's talons,
