تعاليcome نقضِlet us repay قبلَbefore الصبحِdawn دَيناa debt
فليلُfor the night الوَصلِof union لاdoes not يمشيwalk الهُوَيناslowly
Come, let us repay a debt before dawn;
Come let us break the pact before dawn
For the night of union does not walk at a leisurely pace.
For the night of union does not walk the infatuated
فماso how أحلىsweet الغرامَlove بلاwithout سخاءٍgenerosity
ولاnor بخلٍstinginess ووَصلكِand your union بينَbetween بيناbetween
How sweet is love, with neither lavish giving
So what is sweeter than love without stinginess
Nor stinginess—your union poised between the two.
Nor miserliness, and your union in between us
ألاAh ياO ميُّMayy كمhow often بتناwe spent the night صباحاًmorning
نُقَطِّرُwe let drip دَمعناour tears منfrom مُهجَتَيناour two hearts
Ah, Mayy, how often we spent the night till morning,
Oh water of life, how many mornings have we spent
Letting our tears drip from our two hearts,
Dripping our tears from our eyelids
ونمزجهُand we mingle it سخيناًwarm حينَwhen كنّاwe were
نُقَرِّبُwe bring close للتلائمto fit together وَجنَتيناour two cheeks
And mingling them, still warm, when we were
And mixing it hot when we were
Bringing our two cheeks close, so they might meet.
Bringing our cheeks together for intimacy
وأزهارُand the blossoms البنفسجِof violets ذابلاتٌwithered
بأعيُنِwith eyes حُسَّدٍof the envious ترنوgaze إليناtoward us
And the violet blossoms, withered,
And the violets faded
Gazed at us with envious eyes.
In the eyes of envious watching us
ويَلمسُناand touches us النسيمُthe breeze علىwith اشتياقٍlonging
فيُرجِفُناso it makes us tremble ويَسرُقُand steals زَفرتيناour two sighs
And the breeze touches us with longing,
And the breeze touches us longing
Making us tremble and stealing our two sighs.
Trembling us and stealing our sighs
وكمand how often بتناwe spent the night وطرفُwhile the eye النَّجمِof the star يرنوgazes
وأغصانُand the branches الحِمىof the sanctuary تحنوbend tenderly عَليناover us
And how often we spent the night while the star's eye gazed,
And how many times did the star blink
And the branches of the sanctuary bent tenderly over us.
And the branches of passion bowed to us
أرىI see فيin عَينِكِyour eye النجلاءwide نفسيmyself
ونورَand the light الحقِّof truth فيin عَينيmy eye تريناyou see
I see myself in your wide eye,
I see my soul in your bright eyes
And in my eye you see the light of truth.
And the light of truth in my eyes seeing us
ونُقسِمُand we swear أنناthat we نرعىwe honor عُهوداًvows
فنعقدُso we link للتعاهدِto pledge mutually خِنصَريناour two little fingers
And we swear that we will keep our vows,
And we swear to keep pacts
So we link our two little fingers in mutual pledge.
Clasping our wrists for commitment
ونجزعُand we grow distraught منat تنائيناour being apart فنبكيso we weep
ونشبكُand we entwine للتَّدانيto draw close ساعِدَيناour two forearms
And we grow distraught at being apart, so we weep,
And we recoil from our separation and cry
And entwine our two forearms to draw close.
And clasp our arms for closeness
تشاكيناwe shared our woes وَبينَand between يديكِyour two hands رأسيmy head
وبينand between يديَّmy two hands خصرُكِyour waist فاشتَفيناso we were healed
We shared our woes, my head between your hands,
My head complaining between your hands
And your waist between my hands—so we were healed.
And your waist between my hands so we healed
