From the branch of your heart, love's blossoms scatter.

Is there no shade or fruit left for me after it?

Though its water has run dry, it has been refreshed

by my tears, pouring in longing upon the branches.

Winter has gone, and the west wind lies still.

Here is spring, and here are the grass and flowers.

I would not smile upon the world and its splendor

were it not for a face upon which the moon rises.

So make it rise over my anguish, to comfort me,

for clouds spread beneath the full moon's light.

And soothe me with embellished hopes,

and clasp my hand, that a trace may remain in it.

Joy is scarce, so seize the moments

when love, the cup, and the strings bring delight.

Many are the sorrows of hearts—have you not

seen how the drinkers' cups shatter?

Today is mine, so come, let us share some joy,

for time, O Mayy, spares nothing and leaves nothing.

Birds sing when morning appears to them,

and flowers grow when rain waters them generously.

So walk upon the flowers while spring is ours,

where the breeze is gentle, pure, and fragrant.

    ولا تكوني مَلاكاً إننا بشر

    And be content with what gives all people contentment;

and do not be an angel—we are human.

The eye sheds tears from sorrow and from laughter.

Put cares aside—for what good does gloom do?

I remembered you beneath the radiant stars,

as though they were your pearly necklace scattering.

Then love for you nearly made me weep; I was kept awake

by my longing for you; tears and sleeplessness grew sweet.

And do you remember, O fair one, our night,

when passion was magic, its incantations the hour before dawn?

You raised your palm toward the Pleiades, saying:

“Remember, for life is nothing but love and remembrance.”

    Then come to pleasures, remembering

what has passed of them, for remembrance holds lessons for us.

You are the universe; be mine, and I shall become a king

who says, “The earth is contained between my hands.”
