لئنeven if ذبلتwithers كالزَّهرِlike flowers يوماًone day قَريحتيmy poetic gift
وقدand indeed فَنيَتhas perished منfrom كثرةِthe abundance of الحبِّlove مُهجتيmy lifeblood
Even if one day my poetic gift withers like flowers,
If my talent has withered like a flower one day
and my lifeblood is consumed by so much love,
And my brain has been exhausted by excessive love
فليso I have منهُماfrom them both عطرٌfragrance ونورٌand light لأننيbecause I
I poured them both out فيfor خَيرِthe good of أهليmy kin وأُمتيand my nation
I shall have fragrance and light from both, for I
I have from them a scent and a light because
have poured them both out for the good of my kin and my nation.
I have watered them with the best of my family and nation
ستخفقُwill beat فيin الدُّنياthe world قلوبٌhearts كثيرةٌmany
لِقَلبيfor my heart وتَجريand will flow أدمعٌtears بعدَafter دَمعتيmy tear
Many hearts in the world will beat
Many hearts will throb in life
for my heart, and tears will flow after mine.
For my heart and tears will flow after my tears
أُمِرٌّI run علىover جرحيmy wound القديمِold أَنامِليmy fingertips
فأسقطُso I collapse منfrom آلامهِits agonies مثلَlike ميِّتone dead
I run my fingertips over my old wound,
It is easy for my old wound - my fingers
and collapse from its agonies like one dead.
So I remove from its pains like the dead
وأمشيand I walk حزيناًsorrowful خائفاًfearful متردِّداًhesitant
علىupon طَللِthe ruins of النُّعمىbliss وقبرِand the grave of الشبيبةyouth
And I walk sorrowful, fearful, hesitant,
And I walk sadly, fearfully, hesitantly
upon the ruins of bliss and the grave of youth.
On the ruins of the blind and the grave of youth
بكىwept الركبُthe caravan حَوليaround me يومَthe day of توديعِbidding farewell to أهلِهمtheir families
فماyet not حرَّكتstirred وَجديmy grief دموعُthe tears of الأحبّةloved ones
The caravan wept around me the day they bade their families farewell,
The caravan wept around me on the day of farewell
yet the tears of loved ones did not stir my grief.
So my passion did not move the tears of loved ones
ولاnor سمحتyielded عَينيmy eye بأثمنَwith the most precious قطرةٍdrop
لأنَّbecause وداعَparting from الأمِّthe mother نشَّفَdried up عبرتيmy tear
Nor did my eye yield its most precious drop,
Nor did my eye allow the most precious drop
for parting from my mother had dried my tears.
Because my mother's farewell dried my tears
أرىI see القلبَthe heart بينbetween الهمِّworry والحزنِand sorrow مُغلقاًclosed
لنورٍto light وتغريدٍand birdsong وحسنٍand beauty وخضرةand greenery
I see the heart, amid worry and sorrow, closed
I see the heart closed between anxiety and grief
to light and birdsong, beauty and greenery.
For light, warbling, beauty and greenness
وأجدَبَand grew barren حتىuntil ملَّgrew weary منof كلِّall نضرةfreshness
It has hardened until gentleness has become cruelty,
It has hardened until gentleness became cruelty
and grown barren until it is weary of all freshness.
And it dried up until it was fed up with all freshness
فكيفَhow then أُداويI treat بالمحاسنِwith beautiful things داءَهits sickness
علىwith غيرِno شيءٍshare منof نعيمٍbliss ولذةand pleasure
How, then, can I cure its sickness with beauty,
So how do I cure its disease with beauty
when it has no share of bliss or pleasure?
Without any bliss and pleasure?

تبدَّتappeared لهto it الدُّنياthe world علىin خَيرِthe finest صورةform
And if it is open to comfort and joy,
If it is open to intimacy and delight
the world appears to it in its fairest form.
The world has appeared to him in the best form
هوit القلبُthe heart مرآةٌa mirror لدىbefore كلِّevery صورةٍimage
تراءتappeared علىin حالَيthe two states of صفاءٍclarity وكدرةand cloudiness
The heart is a mirror for every image
It is the heart a mirror in the image of every image
that appears, whether in clarity or cloudiness.
That appeared to me serene, purity and gloom
تولّىhas passed زمانٌa time فيهِin which علّلنيsoothed me الهوىlove
كذلكَlikewise أحلامُthe dreams of الشّبابِyouth اضمَحلَّتhave faded away
Gone is the time when love soothed me;
A time has passed in which love has blamed me
so too have the dreams of youth faded away.
Thus the dreams of youth have faded
فماso not إنindeed لهاfor them عودٌa return علىamid الذلِّhumiliation والنّوىand separation
تُذِلُّhumbles نفوساًsouls لمnot تكنwere للمذلّةfor humiliation
There is no return for them amid humiliation and separation,
They have no return to humiliation and misery
which humbles souls never meant for humiliation.
That humiliate souls that were not for humiliation
ولكنbut ليI have منfrom ربةthe goddess of الشعرpoetry عطفةًa favor
فأسلوso I find solace بإكليلٍin a wreath يُزَيِّنُadorns جبهتيmy brow
Yet I have the favor of the muse of poetry,
But the mistress of poetry is kind to me
so I find solace in a wreath that adorns my brow.
So I console myself with a wreath that adorns my forehead
وقدand indeed وَهبتshe gave عينيَّmy eyes بعضَsome of جمالِهاher beauty
وكانتand she was إلىwith كلِّall الحسانِthe beautiful women شَفيعتيmy intercessor
And she has given my eyes some of her beauty,
And my eyes have given me some of her beauty
and has been my intercessor with every lovely woman.
She was my intercessor for all beauty
وإنيand indeed I منof العُربِthe Arabs الذينwho سُيوفُهمtheir swords
وأقلامُهمand their pens كانتwere نجومَthe stars of البريَّةcreation
And I am of the Arabs, whose swords
I am from the Arabs whose swords
and pens were the stars of creation.
And their pens were the stars of the wilderness
فخطُّso the writing of يراعيmy reed pen مثلُlike ضَربِthe blows of شِفارِهمtheir blades
وفوقَand above شعارِthe battle cry of الصيدِthe noble chiefs شعرُthe verse of قصيدتيmy poem
So my reed pen's strokes are like the blows of their blades,
My line observes like the stroke of their blades
and my poem's verse stands above the nobles' battle cry.
And above the motto of hunting, there is the poetry of my poem
لكِfor you الفَخرَpride بيin me إنيindeed I أخوكِyour brother فَفاخريso vie in pride
إذنthen أخواتٍsisters يفتخرنَthey take pride بإخوةin brothers
You may take pride in me—I am your brother—so vie in pride,
Yours is the pride in me, I am your brother so be proud
then, with sisters who take pride in their brothers.
When sisters are proud of their brothers
