ويزيدُني حبِّي لهم تكليفا

For my people's good, I love writing,

and my love for them increases my burden of duty.

إني أخو العربِ الفخورُ بقومهِ

إني أخو العربِ الفخورُ بقومهِ

إن كنتَ تطلبُ يا فتى تَعريفا

إن كنتَ تطلبُ يا فتى تَعريفا

I am the Arabs' brother, proud of my people,

if you seek, young man, an introduction.

عذراؤهم في خدرِها وصبيُّهم

عذراؤهم في خدرِها وصبيُّهم

يحمي الخفارةَ طاهراً وعَفيفا

يحمي الخفارةَ طاهراً وعَفيفا

Their maiden is in her secluded chamber, and their boy

guards modesty, pure and chaste.

هذي مكارمُهم فخذها من فتى

هذي مكارمُهم فخذها من فتى

ما كانَ إلا باسلاً وظريفا

ما كانَ إلا باسلاً وظريفا

These are their noble qualities; so take them from a young man

who has been nothing but valiant and refined.

أو ما رأيتَ حميَّةً عربيةً

أو ما رأيتَ حميَّةً عربيةً

منِّي ولي قلمٌ يفلُّ رهيفا

منِّي ولي قلمٌ يفلُّ رهيفا

And have you not seen Arab zeal

in me, whose pen blunts a keen blade?

وقُلِ السلامُ على أصولٍ أنبَتَت

وقُلِ السلامُ على أصولٍ أنبَتَت

هذي الفروعَ فشرّفَت تَشريفا

هذي الفروعَ فشرّفَت تَشريفا

And say: Peace be upon roots that brought forth

these branches, and were thus greatly honored.

أينامُ قومي بعدَ ما أسمعتُهم

أينامُ قومي بعدَ ما أسمعتُهم

صوتاً تردَّدَ في الأنامِ قصيفا

صوتاً تردَّدَ في الأنامِ قصيفا

Will my people sleep after I have made them hear

a voice that resounded thunderously among humankind?
