عَجِبتُI marveled للدينِat religion كمhow much فيهِinto it الوَرىhumankind بَحَثواthey inquired
عَجِبتُ للدينِ كم فيهِ الوَرى بَحَثوا
والبعضُand some قدindeed آمنواthey believed والبعضُand others قدindeed عَبثواthey trifled
والبعضُ قد آمنوا والبعضُ قد عَبثوا
I marvel at religion—how much humankind has inquired into it!
And some have believed, while others have trifled.
زادواthey increased الجهالةَignorance جهلاًignorance والعمىand blindness عَمَهاًbewilderment
زادوا الجهالةَ جهلاً والعمى عَمَهاً
وفوقَand over سمٍّpoison قديمٍold سمَّهمtheir poison نَفثواthey spat
وفوقَ سمٍّ قديمٍ سمَّهم نَفثوا
They added ignorance to ignorance, and bewilderment to blindness.
And over old poison they spat their own poison.
