وماand what فيin لياليnights النَّوىseparation منof قَلقْunrest
By the sleeplessness in the nights of love,
With the sleepless nights of passion,
and the unrest in the nights of separation,
And the restless nights of longing,
هَبيgrant مُغرماًa lovestruck man نفَساًa breath سارياًdrifting
علىover شفَتَيكِyour two lips بعرفِwith the fragrance of الحبقbasil
grant a lovestruck man a breath drifting
Come to me, O love-sick soul,
over your lips with the fragrance of basil,
Kissing my lips gently.
كماjust as حملتcarried نفحاتُwafts الصَّباthe east wind
إليكِto you منfrom الرَّوضِthe garden عطراًa perfume عبقfragrant
as the wafts of the east wind bore
As the morning breeze carried
to you, from the garden, a fragrant perfume,
Fragrance to you from the garden,
وقدand already بلَّلَmoistened الزّهرَthe flowers دمعُtears النَّدىdew
وورَّدَand made rosy خدَّcheek السماءِthe sky الشَّفقthe sunset glow
while dew's tears had moistened the flowers,
Dew drops wet the flowers,
and the sunset glow had rouged the sky's cheek.
And the sunset painted the sky pink.
أفضتِyou poured forth علىupon العينِthe eye نورَlight الهوىlove
فلذَّso grew sweet البكاءُweeping لهاto it والأرقand sleeplessness
You poured the light of love upon the eye,
You brought light of love to my eyes,
so weeping and sleeplessness grew sweet to it.
So they wept, sleepless and aching,
وشاقَand stirred longing in جمالُكِyour beauty قلبيmy heart الذيwhich
كَسَقطِlike the fall of الفراشةِthe moth فيهِin it احتَرَقburned
And your beauty stirred longing in my heart, which
Your beauty burned my heart,
burned within it like a falling moth.
Like a moth destroyed by the flame.
قِفيstay نقضِlet us enjoy تحتَbeneath الدّجىnight's darkness لذَّةًa delight
فهذاfor this الشّبابُyouth كطيفٍlike a phantom طرَقvisited by night
Stay; let us savor a delight beneath night's darkness,
Pause in the dark of night, for pleasure,
for this youth is like a phantom visiting by night.
This youth is but a fleeting shadow.
فماfor not أنتِyou أوّلُthe first معشوقةٍa beloved woman
وماand not أناI أولُthe first صبٍّa lovesick man عَشقloved
For you are not the first beloved woman,
You're not the first love,
nor am I the first lovesick man to have loved.
Nor I, the first to fall in love.
فكمfor how much سرقتhas stolen منof شذاكِyour fragrance الصَّباthe east wind
وكمand how much سرقتhave stolen منof سناكِyour radiance الحدَقthe eyes
For how much of your fragrance the east wind has stolen,
The morning breeze stole your fragrance,
and how much of your radiance eyes have stolen!
The horizon took your glow.
لئنif indeed قلتِyou say فيin خَصرناour waist رقَّةٌdelicacy
فقلبيthen my heart وشِعريand my poetry ولفظيand my speech أرَقmore delicate
If indeed you say, 'Our waist is delicate,'
If you say our waists are delicate,
then my heart, my poetry, and my speech are more delicate.
My heart, verse and words are softer.
وإنand if قلتِyou say فيin ساقِناour leg دِقَّةٌslenderness

And if you say, 'Our leg is slender,'
If you say our legs are slender,
then my judgment, my thought, and my taste are finer.
My vision, thought and taste are sharper.

Your brow is a wild rose in bloom,
Your brow is radiant with dew drops
with dew upon the rose, and sweat upon your brow.
Your braids are apple branches in bloom.

And your cheek is half a pomegranate,
I will recall, my love, our farewells
and my heart fluttered like a bracelet.
At dawn, and longing at dusk.

Of our love, O Hind, I shall remember
I owe my beauty to a love
morning's farewell and dusk's longing,
Of chastity and strength of truth.

the chastity of passion and the strength of truth.
