    Are you rising, radiant, from a night of sorrows,

    like a pearl in a necklace of pure gold?

    Look toward me, if you are awake with me,

    so that the light from you may fill my breast and my eyelids.

    فَنَحنُ على بُعدِ المزارِ رَفيقان

    We each have a light, with darkness all around us;

    so we are companions, though far apart.

    The light of guidance appears to one bewildered in the dark

    as a sail of deliverance that appeared to a drowning sufferer.

    On the dark horizon you shone like a tear

    on the cheek of a distraught lover amid sorrows.

    Have the tears of the righteous gathered in you,

    so that through them you resemble a treasure of pearls and coral?

    Or did they mingle one day and become rays

    upon darkness, or mercy in a time of tyranny?

    وإن لم يكن هديٌ رضيتُ بسلوان

    So be my soul's guide when it goes astray;

    and if there is no guidance, I will be content with consolation.

    And reveal your secret to me in confidence, just as

    I reveal my secret in the fervor of my faith.

    ولا أُنسَ لي بين الهمومِ بإنسان

    I am a poet who laments love, not an astrologer;

    and amid my cares, I find no solace in any human being.
