I dreamed that I was walking in the gardens,

And around me and above me, everything was blooming and verdant.

And the full moon had lights like threads of silver,

A stream and a pool were silvered by them.

And the wind in the leaves had the melodies of a poet,

Whose sigh rose above the rabab's moans.

So the singing of a thousand birds enraptured me,

Saying to the poets, 'You are a prince.'

And a bird taught me chanting and composing verse,

Whose whistle sounds in lovers' hearts.

So I said to it, 'O inspirer of poetry and love,

Repeat a melody of love, for life goes on.'

Then it sang and flew away, so I followed it,

And in my longing for it, I nearly flew.

And the birds became the loveliest of women,

Around you, and their garments were silk from you.

And you were but the lone bird among them,

And it had no equal among the birds.

Then you said, 'Do you know what love is?' I said, 'A tear.'

Then you said, 'And what is remembrance?' I said, 'Fragrance.'
