ولائمةٍand a reproachful woman قالتshe said تلوَّثتَyou have become sullied بالوَحلِwith mud
فقلتُso I said لهاto her ياO ميُّMayy قدindeed عَثرتstumbled رِجليmy foot
And a reproachful woman said, “You have been sullied with mud.”
A woman of ill-repute said I was soiled with mud
So I said to her, “O Mayy, my foot has stumbled.”
So I said to her: O water, my feet have stumbled
تمنَّيتُI wished إصلاحاًreform وعِلماًand knowledge لجاهلٍfor an ignorant man
فقالَso he said رضيناwe are content بالسَّفاهةِwith folly والجهلand ignorance
I wished for reform and knowledge for an ignorant man,
I wished to reform and enlighten an ignorant man
but he said, “We are content with folly and ignorance.”
But he said: We are content with foolishness and ignorance
ولماand when رَأيتُI saw اللؤمَbaseness يَرفعُraises صوتَهُits voice
أسفتُI grieved علىfor أهلِpeople of الفضيلةvirtue والفضلand merit
And when I saw baseness raising its voice,
And when I saw the base raise their voices
I grieved for the people of virtue and merit.
I grieved for the people of merit and virtue
سَيقتلهwill kill him منيfrom me احتقارٌcontempt لأننيbecause I
أرىI see السّيفَthe sword للأشرافِfor the noble والسَّوطَand the whip للنّذلfor the base man
My contempt will kill him, for I
Contempt from me will kill him because I
see the sword as meant for the noble, and the whip for the base man.
See the sword for the noble and the whip for the vile
