    فهانَ علينا في محَبَّتِكِ القَتلُ

    All beauties have gathered in you, O Juml;

    So being slain for love of you is easy for us.

    For you are but the image of the homeland—

    When it asks for souls, we gladly give them.

    وحسنُكِ عمرٌ يا مليحةُ لا فصل

    Upon your radiant face is the springtime of our land;

    And your beauty is a lifetime, O lovely one, not a season.

    وأنتِ لهُ بعضٌ وفي وجهكِ الكلُّ

    I see in you Lebanon's glory and splendor;

    And you are part of it, while in your face is the whole.

    ولولا الهوى ما شاقَ لبنانُ والأهلُ

    So for its sake you are dear to us;

    And but for love, Lebanon and kin would not stir longing.

    وخدُّكِ فيهِ الماءُ والزهرُ والظلُّ

    For your eye holds its sun and sky;

    And your cheek holds the water, the flowers, and the shade.

    So how lovely the play of youth in the homeland!

    And how lovely the valley, and how lovely the field!

    And how lovely a smile from your sweet mouth,

    When you say, 'O madman, why do you not cease pining?'

    For the drops of dew in a rose's cup,

    Which the breeze's phantom kisses before slipping away,

    Are no lovelier than your white teeth in a mouth

    From which the bees almost sip when it parts in a smile.

    Nor is the lush poplar, when the east wind blows

    And it delights in that swaying and coy grace,

    More graceful, O slender-waisted one, than your figure:

    When it sways, the heart, faith, and reason sway.
