About faults that shadowed my virtues.

Yes, my heart was a temple for beauty,
And tales of love were my prayers.
And passion's tales were my prayers.

When I saw love as deceit and trickery,
I returned to my forbearance through my truthful counsels.
I returned to my forbearance with the honesty of my sermons.

Yet she stirred my embers with a disturbing glance,
My ashes, exposing the hidden embers.
Revealing the hidden coals.

The gazelle of love is an Arab Syrian,
Says, "I inherited beauty from gazelles.
Saying, “I inherited beauty from gazelles.”

So, despite our differences, they are my sisters."
So they are sisters to me.

And her mother was among the dignified, outgoing women.
Who was a marvel among maidens.

And was none but the most dazzling of modest women.
So she is the most dazzling of girls.

The closest thing to what my heart offered her waist
In delicacy joined with firmness.
Was a subtlety joined with firmness.

And said, “Now I regret after it's gone.”

But one like me has a truthful gaze.
But my kind of love has truthful glances.

“O girl, come give me a kiss.”

And is as sweet as water among plants.

I intercede through kinship and nearness.

And these two are for the angels and queens.

I tolerated the love in heart and eye for passion
Even if she met my finest gifts with stinginess.
Though I could have reciprocated with miserliness to her gifts.

So I weep as a cloud while a garden laughs,
So I cry a cloud when the garden laughs,
Unaware of the throbbings within my breast.
Confused by the throbbings in my chest.

Playing joyfully by its light without night talk.

In the house of the beloved I will remember a night chat
From which I took the sweetest words as provisions.
From which I gained the sweetest words.

Mellow of voice and sweet of gaze.

As we beheld the gardens and hills around us.
Seeing gardens and hills around us!

But after love there is remoteness and solace,
For there is no lasting stay in a young beauty's home.
For nothing lasts in the land of extinction.
