It is love: let lovers suffer through remembrance.

And many a cure comes from weeping over a trace.

How many concerns lie in its remnants, and how many

sorrows they hold; in love's light, what was hidden appeared.

    فأثبَتَها قلبي وأنكَرها البَصَر

    A familiar waft of fragrance guided me to her;

my heart affirmed her presence, though sight denied her.

What a heart you are, never tiring of love!

And what an eye you are, never tiring of looking!

I spent the night kissing the traces of that time,

nothing but a monk who kissed images.

How sweet to kiss her, for the man she slew!

I am the captive lover whose blood goes unavenged.

Adam wept for the gardens before me, yet

I gazed upon the dwellings' traces, while he did not.

In his affliction he was not like me; and thus,

through what his Eve desired, humankind came to grief.

And within the folds of my breast is my beloved's voice,

the melody of a nightingale that whistled through love's nights.

    فيا حبّذا لو جَمّدَ الزمنُ العِبر

    The days have erased the traces of our love;

how I wish time would freeze the tears,

so I could string them into a necklace fit for her neck.

But what is in the heart is more precious than pearls.

    لها عطرُهُ واللونُ في عينها استَقر

    Of all flowers, she loved the violet;

its fragrance was hers, its color settled in her eye.

How many bouquets of it I gathered for her breast!

And she was like a flowering branch that bent in my hand.

Indeed, I love her, and I love a violet

that withered between her breasts but flourished in my heart.

I still have a bouquet that, in her absence,

is like my body and heart, both withered by sorrow.

Ah, many a night beneath its full moon I imagined her

a cluster of flowers gathered by one who endured.

    Then I kissed a neck bearing a lily's fragrance,

at evening, and an eye whose languor brought a trance.

It was as though, when I closed her eyelid with my mouth,

a heavenly light descended upon my heart.

Likewise, in the heat of late morning, the east wind's breath

makes the eyelids of flowers and greenery droop.

By your life, no fragrance in the garden of roses

equals that of hair loosened and spread in my hand.

I said to her, while night's robe had grown thin

and fluttered upon the breath of the hour before dawn,

while her eyelids drooped like jasmine:

Though the eyes grow languid, the heart has not grown faint.

    فيا حبّذا لو هكذا عيشُنا عَبر

    I tired of a bliss I would never tire of;

how I wish our life could pass like this!

By love's oath, had our night endured or lengthened,

I would have been, despite my foes, the happiest of mankind.

O dense forest of Palermo, recount

a tale of lovers on a night of conversation,

that evening when we spent the night amid water and greenery,

seeing death in slumber and life in wakefulness.

And our boat glided over your waters, upon which

my heart melted and my tears were scattered.

I embraced her where the branches embraced,

and kissed her where the breeze sighed for us.

Oh, what kisses, before which the darkness fled!

And what embraces, at which the trees trembled!

    فخُلتُ ظلامَ اللّيلِ من نورِه نفَر

    So fiercely did I embrace her that her necklace came undone;

I thought the night's darkness fled from its light.

And as she gathered its beads, I imagined her palm

radiant and fragrant, with dew dripping upon it.

She said, 'So you scattered my necklace, taking a risk!'

I told her, 'How slight is danger in love!

Has my heart no plea for mercy in its love for you?

Even the gravest sin in love is forgiven.

For beneath the gardener's hand the dew is scattered,

and beneath the archer's hand the bowstring snaps.'

I recited to her verses of longing, and she bent down,

saying, 'Will you not spare me, nor leave me be?

    فإنشَادُكَ الشّاجي يذُوب له الحَجر

    My heart has flowed into my tears at your verse;

stones melt at your sorrowful recitation.'

    فيا حبّذا جرحٌ بهِ الباسلُ افتخر

    I said, 'My wounds in suffering are many;

how dear a wound in which a brave man takes pride!'

    وبعدَ ذُبولِ الغصن لا ينفعُ المَطر

    I wept over my heart so my tears might heal it;

but once the branch has withered, rain is of no use.

An Iraqi woman has possessed my heart; hers are

the charms of Baghdad, whose elegance is renowned.

I tell her that I have been stirred by the glory of a nation

whose virtues are radiant, whose sons are illustrious.

O daughter of my uncle, love for your land joins

my heart to yours: thus my honor commands.

Its majesty shines upon this face,

so I mock ignoble fate when it betrays.

For your sake I love it, and for its sake I love

your face: love is divided between the two.

We have a nation for which we grieve; its sword,

despite its long service against its foes, has broken.

Yet it has returned, gleaming white and keen-edged,

and its star has shone among the stars.

She will regain honor and glory by unsheathing it,

and gather beneath the banner both nomads and townsfolk.

For two eyes like the two Farqad stars, there opened

the sky of a heart whose light appeared for guidance.

Yours is the gaze that falls toward it, as

that blazing meteor fell into the sea.

There was a farewell, after which hopes were lost,

like tears that streamed from our eyes and were lost.

    I wept, a stranger, at a stranger woman's weeping,

and told her, 'Power cannot overcome fate.'

She spent the night showing me herself in her tears,

and I spent the night reminding her of the tears upon my face.

May the rain, the light, the birds, and the fragrance greet

a face upon which the garden scattered its blossoms.

May good be hers; I remember her kindness.

Her companionship sustained me amid the loneliness of travel.

Have you not seen how light smiles at darkness,

and how the moon lifts the veil of clouds?

Love for her and her memory have wafted from my verse,

as the fragrance of roses wafts from the most delicate sachets.

O apparition that melts the young man,

thus you torment the one I love and the one who remembers.

I see you as a companion in gatherings and solitude,

showing me the ruins of my bliss that has vanished.

Has it beguiled you about me that today I am a poet,

weeping upon my string, with desire now gone,

and that humiliation is sweet to my heart, which has always

known humiliation in love, and triumph in all else?

Love is nothing but remaining chaste when alone,

and forbearance nothing but restraint in victory.

And you who claim poetry and love,

do you possess the experience and knowledge I possess?

Does poetry's fever seize you when the bright stars gaze down

from the blue dome, and the waves roar,

your heart fluttering, your head weighed down,

so the world shakes at what bursts forth from them both?

It is the voice: listen to it, and turn away from the echo.

Live unburdened, and delight in the melodies of one who feels.

is long, while the noblest lives are short.

Ghosts followed one another through them, and there came

manifold anxious thoughts, weighing down the head with reflection.

When my eye opened upon their darkness,

what was like sparks flew from my eyelids.
