O my charming lady, you are a spirit,
My graceful mistress, you are a soul
You go forth or return with the fragrance of roses.
That wanders the rose gardens at dawn and dusk
بلفظِكِby your words وابتسامِكِand your smile همتُI was enraptured حتىuntil
رأيتُI saw الصبحَthe dawn بينهماbetween them both يلوحُgleams
I was enraptured by your words and your smile, until
With your words and smiles I was inspired
I saw the dawn gleaming between them.
I saw the sunrise between them flashing
فديتُكِmay I be your ransom حدِّثينيspeak to me تُطربينيyou enrapture me
فصوتُكِfor your voice فيهِin it ألحانٌmelodies تنوحlament
May I be your ransom; speak to me, and you will enrapture me.
My darling, talk to me, delight me
For your voice holds melodies that lament.
For your voice has melodies that ache
وإنand if أنشَدتِyou recite منof شِعريmy verse قليلاًa little
تصبّانيcaptivates me علىupon فيكِyour mouth الصّبوحthe morning wine
And if you recite a little of my verse,
And if you recite some of my poetry
The morning wine upon your lips captivates me.
The early dawn pours upon your mouth
نذوبُwe melt صبابةًwith longing وهوىًand passion ولطفاًand tenderness
وروحاناand our two souls المعذبتانِboth tormented روحone soul
We melt with longing, passion, and tenderness,
We melt into tenderness, passion and charm
And our two tormented souls are one soul.
While our tortured souls are soothed
ونأملُand we hope فيin الهوىlove العذريِّchaste برءاًhealing
لجرحَيناfor our two wounds فتَنفَتِحُyet open الجروحthe wounds
And in chaste love we hope for healing
And we hope that innocent love will heal
For our two wounds—yet the wounds open.
Our wounds, so that they open and heal
فهذاso this النورُthe light فيin عينيكyour two eyes منِّيfrom me
وطيبُكand your fragrance منfrom فميmy mouth أبداًforever يفوحwafts
So this light in your eyes is from me,
For this light in your eyes comes from me
And your fragrance forever wafts from my mouth.
And your sweetness from my mouth always diffuses
