ألمَّbefell بجسمٍupon a body كانwas غُصناًa branch منof الآسِmyrtle
ذبولٌwithering منfrom الجرحِthe wound الذيthat ماno لهُfor it آسِa healer
A body once a branch of myrtle was struck
My body ached as if it were a branch, once green,
by withering from a wound that has no healer.
Now withered by a wound beyond all healing.
لقدindeed كنتُI was فيin ذاكَthat الزمانِtime الذيwhich صفاwas serene
أسيرُI walked كطاووسٍlike a peacock وقائدِand a commander of حرَّاسguards
Indeed, in that serene time, I used to
Long ago I lived in days of ease and cheer,
walk like a peacock and a commander of guards.
Master, not slave, and spoke with voice of meaning.
وأحسبنيand I thought myself عنof أكبرِthe greatest of الناسِpeople فيin غِنىindependence
فأحوجَنيthen made me need دَهريmy days إلىof أصغَرِthe least of الناسpeople
And I thought I had no need of the greatest of men,
I thought that I would never know the day
then my days made me dependent on the least of men.
When I would need the help of the lowliest.
وذلكand that حكمُdecree اللهِGod's فيconcerning خلقهِHis creatures لكيso that
يُليِّنَHe may soften عودَthe stem of الكبرpride والشَّرفِand nobility القاسيhard
And that is God's decree for His creatures, so that He may
But such is the will of God, that those grown great
soften the hard stem of pride and nobility.
Should bend when young plants bend beneath the breeze's weight.
