    فلا تقولي إنَّ الهوى عَبَثُ

    From your eyes, love springs forth;

    so do not say that I am mere idle play.

    The harshness of your glance has gentled my nature,

    for through it I am a gentle lover.

    I have not forgotten my words about a sweet smile:

    “From your lips, perfume rises.”

    Then you said—your sting stinging me—

    “The rose is my mouth, and beneath it lies a field.

    I grew up among flowers from childhood,

    until fragrance and breath became one.

    وكلُّ فرعٍ من أصله يَرِث

    From my father and mother I inherited their beauty;

    and every branch inherits from its root.”
