    From the redness of the rose, or the blush of modesty—

    is this kisser caught between longing and fear?

    Tell me: does the lightness of this bashful walk come

    from the gazelle’s leap, or the partridge’s step?

    إني لآخذُ أشعاري من الزَّجل

    Do not marvel if I spin grace from my ghazal;

    for I take my poems from zajal.

    Never have I come to touch your palms or kiss them

    but I saw upon them haste’s misstep.

    وفي التَّشوُّقِ لذاتٌ بلا أجَل

    In union, love has pleasures that come to an end;

    and in yearning, pleasures without end.
