دَمعيmy tears علىover حُبَّيكِyour two loves فيin الشعرِpoetry
كغمامةٍlike a cloud تبكيweeps علىupon الزَّهرِthe flowers
My tears for loving you are in my verse,
My tears over your two loves, in verse,
like a cloud weeping over the flowers.
Are like a cloud weeping upon the flowers.
ياO هندُHind عينُكyour eye نجمةٌa star سطعتshone
فرَعيتُهاso I watched it فيin أطيبِthe sweetest العُمرlife
O Hind, your eye is a star that shone;
O Hind, your eye is a star that shone,
I watched it through the sweetest of my years.
So I watched it in life's sweetest years.
والثغرُand the mouth زهرُthe blossoms الياسمينَof jasmine إذاwhen
حيَّاهُgreeted it نورُthe light الصبحِof morning بالقَطرwith raindrops
Your mouth is jasmine bloom whenever
And your mouth is a jasmine blossom when
the morning light greets it with drops of dew.
The morning light greets it with raindrops.
والخصرُand the waist باقةُa bouquet نرجسٍof narcissi ذبلتwilted
منfrom بعدafter ماthat نضرتflourished علىupon صَدريmy chest
Your waist is a bouquet of narcissus, withered
And your waist is a bouquet of narcissi that wilted
after it had bloomed upon my breast.
After it had flourished upon my chest.
والصدرُand the bosom موجٌa wave فيin سكينتِهِits stillness

Your breast is a wave in its stillness,
And your bosom is a wave in its stillness,
silvered by the full moon’s rays.
Silvered by the full moon's rays.
والصوتُand the voice مثلُlike صفيرِthe whistle آلفةٍof a devoted female bird

Your voice is like the piping of a devoted bird,
And your voice is like the whistle of a devoted bird
yearning for her fledglings in the nest.
That yearned for her chicks in the nest.
ولقدand indeed مشيتِyou walked كماas مَشىwalked حَجَلٌa partridge
طاردتُهI chased it فيin غابةِthe forest النهرof the river
And you walked as a partridge walks,
And indeed you walked as a partridge walked
which I chased through the forest by the river,
That I chased in the riverside forest,
وكماand as مشىwalked الطّاووسُthe peacock مُفتخِراًglorying
بجمالهِin his beauty فيin جنَّةِthe garden القَصرof the palace
and as the peacock walks, proud
And as the peacock walked, glorying
of its beauty in the palace garden.
In his beauty in the palace garden.
فيكِin you المحاسنُthe charms كلُّهاall of them اجتَمَعَتcame together
فنَعِمتُso I knew bliss ثمthen شَقيتُI became miserable بالذّكرthrough remembrance
In you, every beauty has gathered;
In you all charms have come together;
I knew bliss, then misery in remembering.
So I knew bliss, then misery through remembrance.
