Awaken, and return a smile and a greeting.

The homeland's breeze has split open the roses' bud-sheaths.

Ah, how often you rose early for work and piety!

Prayer and tending to affairs—both continued thus.

And did not know the day had come as an ending.

A light breeze, birdsong, sunshine, and greenery,

And blossoms and boughs that entice gentle rains.

    فلا كانَ فصلٌ إذ رَحَلتِ أقاما

    You loved spring, at ease in its company;

May no season linger now that you have departed.

After longing for light, fragrance, and the east wind,

Must you dwell in a grave too narrow for you, that oppresses you?

Oh, how my breast tightened when you exchanged within it

Breeze and light for confinement and darkness!

It is grievous to us that you should die while our season

Is spring, when the festival casts off its veil.

But that reassurance brought us death.

You are no longer among us to comfort and show affection,

Nor do we hope for reunion and closeness.

And orphans' tears are in the All-Merciful's keeping.

Strength—rather, an infant unable to bear weaning.

Not for an hour have my tears or remembrance of you ceased

In a home shrouded in darkness and rainless clouds.

And sweet talk flowed from you in abundance.

And hear what my heart cherished and desired.

Both have tormented me since I was a boy.

They were companions, for anguish accompanies love,

And both brought us poison and wine.

Blessed because it has enfolded your bones.

You see fields grown verdant, and hills.

And around you morning has dispelled the dark haze.

For no horizon in those abodes has grown cloudy.

And I turn away from whatever holds amusement and pleasure,

And my conscience fears reproach for forgetting grief.

You wept for me in life, and I

Repay you with a torrent of pure tears.

I scattered flowers, tears, and my heart upon you,

And nearly died of grief and yearning.

So do not deny me a fragrant breath and a fleeting visit.

Virtues that endure, though you become decayed remains.

Though souls may have whispered confidences of yearning,

    Our bodily forms cannot speak.

And silence holds its longing and heartache,

Whether you dwell among stars or among gravestones.

With a whisper that stirs my frame.

You are mentioned; righteousness has raised your station.

In that is pride, not consolation, for it

Is praise through which remembrance passes like a sword.

To sisters who take wing as doves.

You all withered in the shade of secluded chambers, as withered

Lilies, thirsting in the woodland shade.

Inclination in her toward anything but bliss and ease.

Went one after another, deeming life forbidden.

I shall weep and call the clouds to weep over it.

And inhale from it an angelic fragrance,

And kiss the tomb and the dust above it.
