Do you not remember the moon's radiance,

showing me pearls upon your lips,

and blossoms whose breaths greet you,

and dew scattered upon them like my tears,

and a murmur from the east wind's breeze,

and water that flowed and roared like my verse,

and a lament we soften with tears,

and whispered confidences that show us the subtlest images?

And between the two hearts, a tale,

tender as the ringing of a string.

And from your glances a ray appears,

and from my glances sparks fly.

So you said, “Gently now! My beauty

is guarded by the angels from human evil.”

So it was nothing but worship of a face

that holds back the lips and entices the gaze,

and the clasping of a hand with a tender hand:

whoever is patient succeeds in kissing it.

Ah, how lovely the time of love gone by,

and oh, how lovely the sweet remembrance of it,

and oh, how lovely the nighttime conversation that set flowing

    the heart's feelings and the light of sight;

and oh, how lovely unbelief, if in

    worship of your beauty my heart has disbelieved;

and oh, how lovely, beneath the wing of darkness,

standing until the predawn light appears!

There we used to fear the watcher,

so we took the trees' rustling for whispers.

God be with you! How fearful lovers are,

and how valiant they are in riding into danger!

    فهل ينفعُ العاشقينَ الحذر

    For love's sake they loved death;

    so does caution benefit lovers?

For if there were a night without morning,

they would live, and all of life would be nighttime conversation.
