I shall follow the shadow of Death among the battalions,

Perhaps healing comes from the edges of keen swords.

For Byron in Greece greeted him with a smile,

And kissed Glory's daughter between her brows.

    فيا حبَّذا دمعُ العذارى النوادب

    He died while the maidens of poetry lamented around him;

Ah, how lovely the tears of mourning maidens!

If indeed I am deprived of love and wealth,

Of all glories, the warrior's honor suffices me.

Suʿad, stay; let us polish the swords for our vengeance,

And for the repose of our angry forefathers' spirits.

Then this people will strike until it sees the right path,

And return smiling at the memory of the battlefields.

I complained of frailty after the struggle, and you told me:

This body has grown accustomed to bearing hardships.

Suppose the body, fair one, is a sword of Indian steel—

Has striking shoulders not blunted the sword's edge?

For many a steed has failed to rise after a stumble,

And many a lion has been humiliated by little foxes.

For I am only the eagle bearing its arrow,

And striking a bleeding heart with its talons.

My poems will live forever, and my beauty will decay,

And my foes will soothe their rancor with my faults.

So tell them: He who was the best of you has died,

And you never knew what lay within that breast.

I see my kin and loved ones walking in procession,

And I walk alone amid the flowers of the processions.

And I lose my companions one after another,

And weep for them in foreign lands.

Some go to suffering, and some to the earth,

And my eye and heart lie between withering and melting.

So I escorted them to the graves, weeping,

And bade them farewell, distraught, beside the ships.

O desolation of exile, O darkness of the earth,

Beyond you both a light gleams for the watcher.

My poor, noble friends—I have lost them,

And none remain but foolish faultfinders.

They pass as phantoms, and I hear their whispers,

And I walk upon a past strewn with ruins.

And I remember them beneath the darkness, while their souls

Fly over spirits from every side.

They have closed their eyelids, yet their glances

Light the darkness of the heart amid calamities.

My nation's division indeed weakens me—

Through its religions—and the evil among its sects.

When will our priests and sheikhs come to an end,

So that we may be free of their snakes and scorpions?

We have suffered for their luxury and comfort, for they

Drive us like pale camels toward deadly perils.

They say: Pray, be patient, and live austerely,

Repent, fast, and stand firm through trials.

While they sit among a lute-player, a wineskin, and a singing girl,

Who toys with their beards and mustaches.

Our poor man goes hungry and naked in caves,

And suffers and weeps patiently, without reproach.

They have amassed their brocades and chickens,

And told God's people: Live on miracles.

And if they go out one brief day for amusement and an outing,

Fine horses draw the costliest carriages.

For how often they have eaten the offering after an atrocity,

And how often denied the faith when profits beckoned.

My salvation, precious though it is, I do not want,

If it comes from a parish priest, a priest, or a monk.

When will a soaring eagle vanquish the crows,

And the lions of al-Shara pounce upon the foxes?

Religions have multiplied, but truth is one,

And through them the priests have attained all their desires.

For religion is only copy after copy,

Adorned for people by a writer's whims.

And most of it is delusion, with which we are misled

By mad devotees lured by the gleam of fireflies.

    فكم خابَ من باكٍ وشاكٍ وطالب

    Our submission and reliance have squandered our strength;

How many weepers, complainers, and petitioners have been disappointed!

So tear through the darkness of deception with reason's light,

And sever cords whose ties serve ulterior ends.

For in this world there is a hell and a paradise

For everyone; after death comes rest for the weary.

And I have seen good and evil as innate,

Without desire, or dread of one who punishes.

How many a devout man fornicates and kills while stealing,

And does not fear the wrath of God who calls to account.

We came with the fates, and livelihood is ingenuity,

And luck that turns a blind eye to fitting recompense.

Have the wicked, then, been denied good things and blessing?

And have the good been granted the loftiest wishes?

How often, when I strive toward a worthy goal, I know

    A cheated man's regret and a disappointed man's anguish.

Is this the reward of goodness—a benefactor is killed,

And the sword's flat is polished in the striker's hand?

Shall I laugh at myself and accept my own wronging,

When the knowledge of the watchful sage has captivated it?

Leave illusion behind, my soul, and live free,

    Without a villain's malice or a penitent's fear.

And brighten at the mention of death, for death is rest,

And believe in no consequences beyond it.

The sky is yours, my soul; the earth belongs to my body.

So never accept the testimony of an absent witness.

I would give my life for you, my mother, Truth; tear apart

The veil of darkness with the light of guidance and reason.

And do not leave brothers as enemies in their own land,

Because of what a wayward man's and a liar's whims have adorned.

Illuminate, illuminate the earth, and guide its peoples

To a junction where the branching paths meet.

Peace upon the spirit of al-Maʿarri; it truly

Shone and sank from sight, a flame among the stars.

Had people possessed justice and wisdom,

The light of piercing stars would not have been lost in darkness.

Daughters of my land who read my poems,

This young man of yours is lost among foreign women.

I address the poetesses among you with love,

And turn away from the frivolity of heedless, playful women.

So comfort a soul whose voice amid its anguish

Is like lightning and thunder among black clouds.

    هما سلوةٌ للصبّ عندَ النوائب

    And grant my poetry a tear and a smile;

Both console the lovelorn when calamities come.

Does the heart not deserve a tender gesture from you,

When it has melted with passion over those tresses,

And lamented, a nightingale, over those curving forms,

And wafted perfume from the whiteness of those bosoms?

Store up fragrance and freshness in spring,

And gather love in the fleeting nights.

And grant me kisses and embraces in secret,

And pamper me in my misery with delights.

And let my hand enjoy precious treasures

That will be my weapon against overwhelming calamities.

And warble like sparrows in the sanctuary,

To hide in the darkness the cries of a cawing crow.

For love, fear neither blame nor vengeance,

For love makes every hardship easier.
