This is the sovereign of the blue dome,

Stripping away the veil of the ashen-gray night.

And the earth, with the lights, is like a poem

Written on the polished white surface.

So I gazed, rejoicing, and spoke in quiet communion,

With light in my eyelids and my innermost depths.

O moon, looking down upon the abode,

Tell of the lovers and the poets.

For how often you have been their night-companion on a night

Whose breezes are like deep sighs.

Do not expose the lovers, for around them

The eyes of envious watchers have multiplied.

At their meeting, veil your rays, which

Are their solace, with the dusky cloud.

And light for them paths along which their tears

Pour down, and mingle a raincloud with light.

For from rays and tears in love

Poems were composed that were not for singing.

And raise the eyes of the despairing toward the radiance,

And be sure to look in at the prisoners' windows.

And visit the ailing one and console him with a comforting diversion,

And guide the lost wanderer there in the wilderness.

And let your silver flow onto the dust, silvering it,

For things' charm lies in the beauty of their coating.

For often companionship has dispelled heartache,

And light has flowed across the earth in abundance.

And look at the deep valley, for it is

A heart longing for you in the darkness.

The rooted mountains hid you from it, so still

Its secrets remain in the dusky-lipped bank.

So rise over it and draw them from its heart

With rays like the thoughts of scholars.

O full moon, how splendid you are in my gloom, and how

Delightful in my night-talk with the beautiful woman!

She is my star in the neighborhood, while you have a star

In the sky, whom you favor for her surpassing splendor.

So the two stars are alike, and thus

Each of us is called a lover of the radiant one.

When you rose upon me in the night of sorrow,

I turned from my despair, for my hope was fair.

Like solace amid sorrow, and like justice amid

Injustice, your light shone in every quarter.

You are nothing but a compassionate visitor to the sick,

Smiling upon the ill and the wretched,

Or a benefactor whose alms and gifts

Are forever distributed among the poor.

Not everyone, like me, is aware of what is revealed

Of the beauty of this radiant countenance.

O full moon, how often I watch you, when the earth has

Grown still, and my heart is wide as space.

For I have watched you piercing the dark nights

With rays that travel with joy,

Like a conqueror passing through a city's wall,

Calling for assurance of safety amid the battle.

And I have watched you rising in your fullness

Above the hills and the lofty summit.

So you appeared to me a king settled upon his throne,

To bring the glad news of peace to the ministers.

And I have watched you, with the sky clear,

In summer, above the green meadow.

So I recalled a mirror grown clear and a gauzy gown,

Green, belonging to a maiden within a tent.

And I have watched you, then, above a lake,

And saw your face in the clear water.

So I longed for the face of a lovely woman who looked into

Her mirror and smiled at the beholder.

And I have watched you as the gardens were woven by

    The hand of spring, while you were like an embroiderer;

And above a bay, from which you rise as an ember

From a lump of coal on a night of scorching heat.

Until, when your cheek grew white and there faded

From it the blush of the budding virgin,

You adorned the thicket's blue expanse with silver,

And opened for me in the waves a path of radiance.

So I wished to walk along it toward you, out of

My longing, and touch the edge of the blue sky.

For how often I have envied the eagle in its flight,

While my heart's wing was broken in anguish.

Take me to you, so I may look down upon humankind

From a lofty peak, for the soul is a daughter of the heights.

For perhaps they would look at me and be captivated by

My light, and my enemies would become loved ones.

And pour upon my heart a brilliant light,

From which comes a cure for despair and melancholy.

For upon your rays, which you have lowered,

Are the signs of my guidance and the smile of my bliss.

Ah, how lovely is the abode of bliss! Would that I

Had not been born to the abode of suffering.

I begin to yearn for the Pleiades, here in the dust,

And the body is at war with the soul.

O dweller in the blue sky, your light is a page

Written by a dweller on the dust-colored earth.

    He offered his greeting, and replied in kind;

You are no higher than he in the heights.

And turn your light away from the windows for a while

If he comes seeking the repose of slumber.

And send your rays through the curtains when

He dallies with a woman of beauty and wit.

You are gentle, so be gentle with him,

As equals are gentle with equals.
