Time has dealt unjustly; go along with it cautiously.

And amid your privation, remember excess.

And when you hear from the muezzin a call

To goodness, strengthen a hand and extend a path.

Be firm if one day you find yourself resolved,

And seek strength and vigor for yourself.

    إن التجاربَ كذَّبَت سقراطا

    And take the truth from many experiences;

Indeed, experience has proved Socrates wrong.

How many a state has died, and another after it

Has fallen ill and found no Hippocrates for itself!

Or do you not see Arabs who, in their weakness, have come

To flatter the Copts and the Nabataeans?

Time is a goldsmith and a thief; often it has

    Strung necklaces and scattered earrings.
