Never did I come to embrace her slender figure

Without her saying, “Young man, be sensible.”

For it was like a branch I tried to bend,

But it slipped from my hand, swaying.

I have not forgotten our evening stroll, when the east wind

Came bringing the groves glad tidings of arrival.

And the water flowed clear, and its murmur

Was my heart’s throbbing when it answered nightingales.

So I plucked a fresh blossom and smelled it,

And with one sniff I revived a withered blossom.

And I drew near to her, placing it at

A slender waist, girdled to make me waste away.

Then she gazed at me shyly and smiled,

And I saw her arrows strike vital spots.

    فلأذكُرنَّكَ ما نَشرتُ غَلائلا

    And she leaned close and said, “My chemises owe their fragrance to you;

So I shall surely remember you whenever I unfold my chemises.

Out of love for the giver of flowers, I keep his flowers,

And in love I see blossoms as letters.”

Then, as we returned, my forearm linked

With her arm, while time hurried away,

She said, “Ah, if only all of life

Were love, and life were not a succession of stages!”
