هَلا وَفَيتِ كما وَعَدتِ حَزينا
وشفَيتِand you healed داءًan ailment فيin الضّلوعthe ribs دفيناburied
وشفَيتِ داءً في الضّلوع دفينا
Why did you not keep faith, as you promised, with a sorrowing man,
Have you fulfilled your promise, as you said you would, to a sorrowful man,
and heal an ailment buried within the ribs?
And cured an illness buried deep in his ribs?
أَأَراكِwill I see you? تبتَسمينَyou smile ليat me فيin خلوةٍseclusion

Will I see you smiling at me in private,
Do I see you smiling at me in solitude,
or will your cruel heart remain miserly?
Or does your cruel heart remain resentful?

That beauty, which is a blessing—
That beauty of yours, which is a blessing,
was it, O lovely one, meant to make us wretched,
Did it, O fair one, exist only to torment us,

And make a hell of our hearts in this world,
while their feelings have made it lovelier?
Increasing their passion by your charm?

Love is the spring sun: sometimes
For love is the sun of spring - now it hides,
it hides, and sometimes lets its rays shine.
Now it smiles again with beams.

For how often you have smiled in love, and how often
Long have you in it smiled and long
you have soaked eyelids with hot tears!
Wet your burning lids with tears.

وشمَمتُ منها الوردَ والنّسرينا
How many a graceful maiden, O Juml, I visited before you,
How many trysts, O gazelle, before you, have I visited,
and breathed from her the scent of rose and eglantine.
And smelled the roses and the narcissi there.

لتزيدَهُ تلكَ المحاسنُ لينا
And I filled my heart with the beauties of her face,
And filled my heart with the beauties of her face
so those beauties might make it more tender.
To soften it by those beauties.

I love the conversation of freeborn women, just as
I love to talk to free women as I love
I love the fragrance of flowers from our valley.
The fragrance of flowers in our valley.

So when we draw near, I melt in chaste restraint,
When we draw near I melt in shyness,
and when we draw apart, I melt with longing.
When we draw apart I melt in longing.

If you turn coyly away from me, you will regret it:
If disdainfully you turn from me, you'll regret it.
will you find a heart like mine in love?
Can you find a heart in love like mine?

Within my ribs is a heart too narrow for its hopes,
In my breast a heart that is too narrow for wishes
held captive only in love for you.
That was never but in your love a captive.

Or have you not seen me brave and dauntless,
Did you not see me valiant and submissive,
cheerful-faced, enchanting and enchanted?
My forehead smiling, infatuated?

للهِ من كَرَمي وبُخلِكِ إنَّني
أُعطيI give الثمينَwhat is precious وأنتِand you لاdo not تُعطيناyou give
أُعطي الثمينَ وأنتِ لا تُعطينا
God, how generous I am, how stingy you are! I
By my generosity and your greed - yes, I
give what is precious, while you give nothing.
Give the precious, while you give nothing.

Whatever you give, what I bestow remains
Whatever you have given, I remain the giver
in every age greater than what you bestow.
In every age beyond what you have given.

ونظمتُ أشعاراً ترنُّ رنينا
I scattered my tears and my lifeblood in love for you,
I shed my tears in my love for you and my passion,
and composed verses that ring resoundingly.
And composed verses that murmur softly.

So I wore, fashioned from immortality's tears and its poetry,
So I wear the necklace of eternity and poesy
a precious necklace dearer than the stars.
More precious than precious gems.

Beauty perishes, and love endures; so do not
Beauty is transient; love endures. Do not
be content with what dazzles and pleases for a while.
Be content with what charms and satisfies a while.

وعرائسُ الشعرِ الحسانُ بقينا
Gone are the women who reveled in silk and jewels,
The miniatures on silk and the ornaments are gone,
while poetry's beautiful brides have remained.
But the beautiful brides of song remain.

Poetry has immortalized our glory and our beauty;
Poetry immortalized our glory and our beauty -
without it, our past would not have smiled on us.
Without it, our past would not have smiled on us.

And beauty is a flower, and passion its fragrance;
Beauty's a flower, and love's its fragrance -
ah, how lovely if you spent the night breathing it in!
Would that you'd let me breathe you in!

How many a flower withers, yet its scent is borne
How many flowers wither but bear their scents -
by breezes of a still night that revive us!
The breaths of a tranquil night revive us.

And how many a pleasure passed swiftly over you,
Some sweetness passed you swiftly,
so you came to weep at its memory.
And you wept to remember it.

Do not think that, in separation, I shall forget
Think not that I will forget in my amorous regrets
what we have seen and encountered in love.
What we saw and met in love!

خُنّتِ العهودَ وماحفظتِ يمينا
For I am tormented in love for you, and perhaps
For I suffer in my love for you, and maybe
you betrayed the pledges and kept no oath.
You broke pledges and forgot your oath.

So pause; let us renew what you forgot with an oath
Then stop, and with a glance we will renew
and with a tear; the memory of both will heal us.
What you forgot, and a tear will heal us.

When I heard the ringing of the trumpets of parting,
When I heard the ringing of the bells of passion,
I saw the towers of love falling.
I saw love's pavilions falling upon us.

And I saw my brother poets, like me,
And I saw my fellow poets, like me,
weeping at the memory of beloveds and the homeland.
Weeping from memories of darlings and fever.

So weep for me when I depart and do not return,
Then weep for me when I go and do not return!
for remembrance of love's past will suffice us.
For memory of loves gone by contents us.

And when a vessel sails at evening,
And when at eventide a ship passes,
bearing the young people of our land, greet us.
Bearing the youth of our land, greet them for me!

And sigh deeply, and weep for a while,
And breathe the place of parting, and weep awhile,
as you hear a moan amid the winds.
As with the winds you hear my lamentation.
