In the Alhambra I remembered the days of youthful passion,

And the bliss and delight they held.

So I said, as a star pierced the cloud:

Peace upon twenty years gone by!

They passed unnoticed by me, like a posy

At Layla's waist that perfumed the finest night.

Only its fragrance and its withering remained,

And only my feeling and my pallor remained to me.

I shall remember my nights with Layla, while passion

Tears at the garments of my patience and chastity.

This heart has never ceased melting in love,

Yet it is steadfast through every hardship.

    فداوِ بوصلٍ داءَه أو بسلوة

    I find love deadly, and concealing it deadlier;

So cure its sickness with union or forgetfulness.

    Otherwise, offer passion a sacrifice,

While the eye of your beloved begrudges a tear.

Jamil, if you love Buthayna, you make her miserable,

And suffer yourself, for love is the grave of youth.

For lovers have neither safety nor repose,

And lovers' wish lies in death.

I have counseled you; listen, little brother, for I

See time as a robber of loved ones' graves.

It withers the flowers of youth with a breath,

And extinguishes passion's lights with a puff.

    سَلِ الوَرَقَ المنثورَ في كلّ روضة

    Ask the birds whether their nests endure;

Ask the leaves scattered through every garden.

They will answer you: nights of pleasure are short,

Like their dreams, they pass while one is unaware.

But nights of misery are long,

And in them, star after star falls.

    فما كان أشقانا بحكم الحقيقة

    I see happiness as an illusion, and misery as truth;

How wretched we were under truth's decree!

How many a smile appears swiftly and is erased,

And how many a tear sears the heart like an ember!

Whenever my soul gives thanks for an hour's sweetness,

It then laments, in anguish, a year's bitterness.

Such is love: in it is every painful memory

Of lost treasures and the sorrows of loneliness.

So we set the skirts of darkness ablaze with a sigh,

And pierce the folds of stillness with a moan.

Honor be yours, O beloved's home! Can we have

Peace, when you have not gladdened us with a visit?

We melt for the face you conceal,

And, if meeting is hard to attain, content ourselves with a glance.

We yearn for union, but modesty holds us back,

So we turn back from cool waters with a burning ache.

If it is in a wilderness, we see poverty as paradise,

For our paradise comes from a smile upon a cheek.

Whenever we pass where a beloved has passed,

Where we saw her, and where she stayed,

This soul struggles until we imagine it

Parting from the body in every surge of longing.

And this heart weakens until we think it

Has fallen from us, fragment after fragment.

We hear the apparition's whisper in every solitude,

And breathe the garment's scent in every gust.

Such is my love: I tasted it, and it melted me,

And my lifeblood flowed over the ink of my poems.

    تُنيرُ سبيلَ التائهين أشعَّتي

    I am the wandering star in the night of separation;

My rays light the path of the lost.

    تطير قلوبُ العاشقين لصفرتي

    I am the whistling nightingale in love's garden;

Lovers' hearts take flight at my whistle.

    تُعطِّرُ أثوابَ الحرائرِ نفحتي

    I am the fragrant ambergris in every gathering;

My fragrance perfumes the garments of freeborn women.

    تركتُ العذارى معجباتٍ بعفتي

    I am the chaste lover in every solitude;

I left the maidens admiring my chastity.

    ملائكةُ الجنّاتِ تشتاقُ رنتي

    I am the resonant lute in a musician's hand;

The angels of paradise long for my ringing tone.

I—I am nothing but a tormented heart,

And a soul that sees in death the greatest pleasure.

Why do my enemies deem my merits ugly,

When my only fault is my eminence and ability?

I left my homeland, eager to travel,

And how many tears of exile over the Sea of the Romans!

And when those shores suddenly appeared,

My poetry burst forth from my joy and wonder.

So I greeted them with dawn's first light, while love

Overflowed over my heart, my mouth, and my eye.

How many a poet there smiled or wept,

Having come for an outing or worship!

And how many a heart there soared with love and yearning,

And many a head came to bow before glory and honor!

Along its sea are civilization, gold, and wealth,

And there all forms of civilization have reached perfection.

    كذا الدهرُ يمحو كلَّ حسنٍ بلمسة

    And our sea is nothing but mirrors of our ruins;

Thus time erases every beauty with a touch.

So I spoke, still a worshipper of beauty,

Watering its sanctuary with my pure tears:

Ah, land of learning, art, and love

That inspired in a poet the tenderest poem,

With the gentlest melody and the fairest nature,

The loveliest statue and the most perfect image!

Peace upon the people of civilization! For me,

The sight of them renews resolve and strength.

Indeed, the spirits from their poets were

For rending shrouds and illuminating darkness.

At their blows, heavy chains were broken,

And a repeated cry demolished the wall of oppression.

Their homelands blazed with the fire of their poetry,

And struck with the sword until they became independent.

Then their glory and bliss returned to them,

And greatness lies between a sword and a banner.

When I saw people building their glory,

I wept over our Arab relics.

Their flowers grew anew in their gardens,

While ours had withered after their freshness.

Each day brings them conquest and spoils,

While we are bewildered between memory and tears.

    If sweet freedom holds death,

Then how welcome my death to free my nation!

Sons of my mother, is there an Arab awakening

Whose cries shake the foundation of humankind?

By God, no freedom is sweet

Unless it springs from moral strength.
