Love's peace be upon you, O valley.

For your overflowing river brings coolness to hearts.

Ah, how lovely my sleep upon the jewel-like pebbles,

So I may doze to the melodies of your singing birds.

And the willow pitched its tent, in love with the water,

Upon a green bank in the shade of lofty mountains.

And how sweet were its submission and reverence

Before a well-watered, slender, swaying poplar.

It swayed proudly, and its faint sound was

The echo of a lover's sighs, or the camel driver's tune.

And how many days in you passed swiftly by,

And how many voices and ringing lute-notes in you,

And how many dreams, diversions, and outings in you,

And Salma for greetings, and Sa'da to bring joy.

May God cherish my days in you, when I was blessed

With the company of dear friends at the finest rendezvous.

And pleasures passed by in a flock, so I caught them

With snares of fortune obedient to wishes.

And how lovely the day our wine-induced languor lasted long,

Through the release of the tavern's daughter from a monastery of ascetics!

And the day we sang to the plucking of a lute,

Stirring memories of love while the world lay still.

Will the lush bank, after our parting,

See us all—sleepers and those who come to drink?

We yearn for your bounty, O valley of love,

Yet, I believe, we shall not return to you.

Dear to us, from your cave—which

Became a gathering place for fellowship and a Kaaba for visitors—

Are sweet water, the shade of rocks, and a stream,

And a roasting fire—how fiercely it was kindled!

O valley of Nahr al-Kalb, may you ever be filled

With white waters and green branches.

And in the winter night, once it has cleared, I hear

A booming roar after a thundercloud has spread its cover.
