لقدindeed حُرمَتhave been denied عينايَmy two eyes مرأىthe sight of جمالِكِyour beauty
فلاso do not تحرمينيdeprive me زَورةًa visit منfrom خَيالِكِyour phantom
My eyes have indeed been denied the sight of your beauty,
My eyes have been deprived of seeing your beauty,
so do not deny me a visit from your phantom.
So do not deprive me of an illusion of your image.
نعمتُI delighted زماناًfor a time بالوصالِin union ولمand have not أزلceased
أحنُّI yearn إلىfor ماwhat لذَّwas sweet ليto me منof وصالكunion with you
For a time I delighted in our union, and I still
I enjoyed the bliss of union for a time, yet still
yearn for the sweetness I found in union with you.
I yearn for the pleasures of your company.
فياso, oh حبّذاhow lovely منof مائكِyour water العذبِsweet نهلةٌa draught
وياand oh حبَّذاhow lovely تهويمةٌa light slumber فيin ظِلالكyour shade
Oh, how lovely a draught of your sweet water!
Oh how splendid a draught from your sweet water,
And how lovely a light slumber in your shade!
Oh how splendid to dream in your shade.
فكمfor how many ليلةٍa night لمdid not أهوَI desire عندكِbeside you بَدرَهاits full moon
وكمand how often كنتِyou were بدريmy full moon فيon اللياليthe nights الحوالكpitch-dark
For on many a night beside you, I cared nothing for its full moon,
So many nights I did not stay awake with you,
and how often you were my full moon on pitch-dark nights!
Though you were my full moon on darker nights.
أُنثّرُI scatter تذكاراتِmemories حبِّكِyour love فيin الدُّجىthe night's darkness
كتَنثيرِlike scattering وَردٍroses فيin حديقةِthe garden of خالكyour beauty mark
I scatter memories of your love in the night's darkness,
I scatter memories of your love in the gloom,
like scattering roses in the garden of your beauty mark.
Like scattering roses in your aunt's garden.
ولولاكِand were it not for you لمdid not أبكِI mourn الشبابَyouth الذيthat مَضىpassed
ولمand did not أرَI see فيin الضيقِdistress انفِساحَthe widening of المسالكthe paths
And had it not been for you, I would not have mourned the youth gone by,
Were it not for you, I would not weep for my lost youth,
nor seen the paths open wide amid distress.
Nor see relief in hardship's paths.
أسيِّدَتيO my lady أنتِyou المليكةُthe queen فيin الهوىlove
وماand not أناI إلاexcept خادمٌa servant لجلالكto your majesty
O my lady, you are the queen of love,
My lady, you are the queen of love,
and I am but a servant to your majesty.
While I am just a servant to your glory.
تدَّللتِyou acted coyly حيناًfor a time والدَّلالُand coquetry سجيَّةٌan innate trait
فكنتُso I was بذلِّيthrough my submission غالباًprevailing لِدلالكover your coquetry
You played the coquette for a time, and coquetry is innate;
You used to act coy, though coyness is in your nature,
so through my submission, I prevailed over your coquetry.
And I tried hard to indulge your whims.
وماand not زالَceased هذاthis الحبُّlove حرباًa war فإنَّناfor indeed we
كعنترةِlike Antarah العبسيِّal-Absi وابنةِand the daughter of مالكMalik
And this love has remained a war, for we
This love remains a war, for we are like
are like Antarah al-Absi and Malik's daughter.
Antarah and Malik's daughter.
