No burden the Bactrian camel bore in its year of provisioning—

the loads upon it, their wheat and barley—

when it came to a village whose food was abundant,

as plentiful as dust, with everything supplying it,

and was told, 'Carry beyond your strength, for it is

brimming full; whoever comes to it does it no harm'—

    وَبَعضُ أَماناتِ الرِجالِ غُرورُها

    was greater than what I had laid upon Khalid;

and some men's trusts are but deception.

Had I laid it on mature camels, they could not have risen

beneath it, those mature camels, until their chests stretched straight.

My friend, who lured my beloved into wrongdoing—

I see her foul taint has afflicted each of them.

Then take her for yourself: I keep faith, and I,

when one like her makes herself alluring, do not approach her.

I fear a day when my companion soul departs,

and her neighbors and her defender abandon her.

Khalid kept my secret through nights when his soul's

affairs followed one another along the straight path.

But when youth and its waywardness assailed him,

and his soul held its temptation and her own debauchery,

he turned his head from me, and his affection was swayed by

the coy charms of a maiden he used to visit.

Her coquetry and an eye ensnared him,

which she keeps turning toward those doomed to misery.

No one keeps his household's hidden secrets,

when the greatest of secrecy's knots is lost,

of all the people, save a chaste man, aided

in this by his own soul's sincerity and goodness.

For it is forbidden for me to betray a trust,

and to trust a soul whose hidden thoughts I do not know.

Guard your own soul, and do not reveal to enemies

the secrets her inward thoughts enfold.

Whenever you wish, I will mount you, with head bowed,

on an unruly, lean she-camel, swift in her leaps.

    تَبينُ وَيَبقى هامُها وَقُبورُها

    Young men's souls are nothing but companions;

they depart, while their skulls and graves remain.

May God not banish your reason when it went raiding

    and traveled—for minds often stumble.

You were a leader for the clan, which turned

to you when some matter constricted their breasts.

    Perhaps, if Umm Amr takes

another lover instead of you, you will revile me to win her back.

    وَأَوَّلُ راضي سُنَّةٍ مِن يَسيرُها

    Do not grieve over a practice you yourself have followed;

the first to accept a practice is the one who follows it.

For what you claimed was in us, and its like,

is surely in you; yet I see you judging it unjustly.

You wrested her away from Abd Amr ibn Malik,

though you were his soul's chosen and finest friend.

He prolonged his stay with her to win her back,

yet far from him were her houses and palaces.

And he swore earnestly to her by God, 'You all are

more delicious than honey when we harvest it.'

But his guile availed him nothing when she displayed

her resolve to part; bitter were her soul's hidden thoughts.

Nor did he prove stouthearted and prudent, possessed of resolve

and strength with which to drive away whoever visited her.

So if you complain of a kinsman's treachery,

that is requital—its aftermath and its redress.

And if you seek a mount for oppression,

one docile to ride, I have no camel for it.

I grew up intractable; my nature was never tamed,

and its saddle never once rose upon my back.

Do not be like the bull for whom they buried

a deadly piece of iron; there he kept digging it up.

Do not be the first of men to receive from me a choice dose

of poison, its powder sprinkled upon it.

And beware lest a cloud from me seize you,

whose roar scatters the sheep of those breaking camp.

    وَهَل يُجمَعُ السَيفانُ وَيحَكِ في غِمدِ

    You wish to bring me and Khalid together;

and can two swords—alas for you!—be put in one sheath?

O Khalid, you showed no regard for a kinsman,

so as to guard me in my absence, or uphold even part of what you profess.

Her two eyes and her neck summoned you to her,

so you leaned toward her, as a lover does, deliberately.

You were like the shimmering mirage when it flows

before people whose riding camels spent the night trotting with them.

So I swore never to cease fashioning a poem

that would leave you and her a byword after I am gone.
